Ducks Claim First-Ever Win at Pac-12 Championship
04/25/19 | Women's Beach Volleyball
LOS ANGELES – The Ducks earned their first-ever win at the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship on Thursday, taking down Utah in the opening round at Merle Norman Stadium.
Oregon recorded a 3-1 victory over the Utes to kick off the conference tournament, breaking through with its first-ever win after falling to Utah in the opening round each of the last two seasons. The Ducks advanced to face No. 1 UCLA a couple hours later, falling to the top-ranked Bruins, 3-0. UO moved to the contender's bracket and played No. 5 seed and 20th-ranked Stanford in the final match of a long day, ending a year of improvement with a 3-0 loss.
The Ducks finish the season at 5-11-1, capping the most successful season yet in the young history of the beach program. Prior to 2019, Oregon had not won more than three duals in a season and had yet to earn a win at the Pac-12 Championship.
How it Happened: Oregon got off to a great start against the Utes, winning both matches in the opening flight to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Josie Cole and freshman Ally Haden pulled out a 22-20 first-set win at No. 4 and then dominated set two, 21-10, to stake the Ducks to a 1-0 advantage. Freshmen Carly and Wallce then secured a thrilling three-set win at the No. 5 set, winning 15-12 in the third to stake Oregon to a 2-0 lead.
Utah answered with a 21-13, 21-16 win on the second court to get on the board and make it 2-1. The Utes were leading on No. 3 as well, but Oregon's top pair of Brooke Nuneviller and Lindsey Vander Weide continued their stellar season with a 21-17, 15-21, 15-10 comeback win to clinch the historic win and continue a season of firsts for the Ducks.
Oregon reached the five-win mark for the first time in program history with the victory, while Nuneviller and Vander Weide extended their UO single-season and career records with their 11th win. Vander Weide earned her 20th career victory, the most in UO individual history.

No. 1 UCLA got off to a fast start and didn't look back in Oregon's second match of the day, racing out to a 2-0 lead with wins at No. 4 and No. 5. The Ducks battled and nearly forced third sets in two of the remaining three matches, but the Bruins clinched the dual with a win on the top court.
In the nightcap, Lauren Page and Emily Mattoon went to a third set at No. 3 after opening with a 21-14 win, and Nuneviller and Vander Weide were a point away from forcing a third set at No. 1, but Stanford won at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 to win the dual and end the Ducks' season.
