Ducks Drop Home Opener, 3-0
03/08/19 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon softball team dropped its first home game of the 2019 season, 3-0, to No. 19 Oklahoma State on Friday night in front of a crowd of 1,807 at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The No. 24 Ducks (11-8) got a solid performance from sophomore Jordan Dail in the circle, but were unable to capitalize at the plate against OSU ace Samantha Show. Oregon will look to rebound on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Cowgirls beginning at 12 p.m.
How it Happened: Oklahoma State (16-5) pushed a run across against Dail in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, bringing a leadoff double around to score on a two-out RBI single.
The Ducks managed just one hit against Show (6-2), but had their chances to score thanks to five walks and a pair of OSU errors. Oregon was caught stealing after getting the leadoff runner on in the second via an error, and a leadoff walk was stranded in the third. The Ducks' best early scoring opportunity came in the fourth, when Allee Bunker worked a leadoff walk and Shaye Bowden followed with a single. A fly ball to right put runners on the corners, but they were stranded there on a deep flyout by Rachel Cid.
Oregon got the leadoff runners on again in both the fifth and the sixth, but were unable to advance them. The Cowgirls added a pair of insurance runs against Dail in the sixth on a two-run home run by Chyenne Factor, who also had the RBI singles in the third.
Haley Cruse and Cid worked leadoff walks for the Ducks in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs, but Show retired the next three batters in order to end the threat and the ballgame.
In the Circle: Dail (9-4) pitched well against an OSU lineup loaded with power, allowing three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and just two walks over seven complete innings.
At the Plate: Bowden managed the lone hit of the night for the Ducks, and April Utecht drew a pair of walks. Bunker, Cruse and Cid also worked free passes.
Quotable: Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi
On the game...
"I see a lot of positives out of it. I thought we hit the ball hard, hit it right at people at times, and didn't get some breaks to go our way. Even going into the last inning, I knew we had a chance to win it, we just weren't able to put it together."
On Jordan Dail's performance...
"Jordan gave us the chance to win. I think she still needs to work on managing her counts, but she put us in a position to win. She threw well. She moves the ball well and did a good job of changing her speeds.
I thought she did a good job executing her plan."
On the emotions of the home opener...
"We've been waiting for this home opener for a long time. It feels like the fall was a couple of years ago. It was nice to finally get to this point. I loved the crowd, I loved the energy of the crowd. I thought they did a great job of creating momentum for us as well. We've been on the road now for four weeks and to get home and play in front of our fans and to play at home was big for us."
Cherish Burks, Senior Outfielder
On the offense…
"I think it's having our confidence up at the plate, trusting our process, knowing our plan. We hit balls hard, just directly at other people and I believe tomorrow they will fall. I'm very confident in our approach and our at-bats. It will come together."
Jordan Dail, Sophomore Pitcher
On pitching at JSS for the first time…
"It was better than I expected, to be honest with you. Especially with the weather, I was not expecting everyone to be out the way they were. I think you could maybe tell with that first batter that I was a little jittery like 'wow, I've never actually gotten to play in front of a home crowd like that before.' It was exciting. Once I settled in I fell into a groove and it was really awesome to have all of those people behind us and cheering for us, being loud, cheering with us and doing chants with us. It was pretty awesome."
Up Next: Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m., with the second game scheduled to start approximately 30 minutes after the first game finishes. Both games will be streamed live on the Pac-12 Plus Facebook page as well as at GoDucks.com/live.
