Comeback Win Over Texas A&M Headlines Day Three of MNCC
02/23/19 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Oregon softball team scored five runs in the final two innings to come roaring back from a 5-2 deficit and defeat Texas A&M, 7-5, on Saturday in the first of two games for the Ducks on day three of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Facing a quick turnaround after the comeback victory, the Ducks dropped their second game of the day, 5-0, to No. 23 Texas Tech to move to 10-4 overall and 3-2 on the weekend with one game remaining in Cathedral City.
GAME ONE – OREGON 7, TEXAS A&M 5
How it Happened: Sophomore Shaye Bowden gave Oregon an early 2-0 lead over the Aggies (9-5) in the first, driving a two-run double into the left-center field gap after a walk by Haley Cruse and a single by Rachel Cid.
A pair of walks came back to hurt UO starter Jordan Dail in the second inning, with Texas A&M taking a 3-2 lead on a two-out, pinch-hit, three-run home run by Abby Smith. The Aggies pushed one more across in the frame on an RBI single, and Kelly Martinez added a solo homer in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-2.
A double play on a line drive wiped away a pair of singles for the Ducks in the fifth, but Oregon's freshmen came through with three runs in the sixth to tie the game, 5-5. A single and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out for Allee Bunker, and the Ducks' second baseman delivered an RBI single through the left side. After a wild pitch put two in scoring position with two outs, Lexi Wagner barreled up a 1-2 pitch for a two-run single down the left-field line to pull the Ducks even.
Texas A&M threatened in the bottom of the sixth with two runners in scoring position and just one out, but Dail kept the game tied with a strikeout and a groundout to shortstop Jasmine Sievers, who charged and made a strong throw on slow roller to end the inning.
Cruse opened the seventh inning with a walk, and Cid put the go-ahead run 60 feet away with a sharp single up the middle. Bowden then bounced a ball that was bobbled by the shortstop, allowing Cruse to score from third to put the Ducks ahead. Texas A&M committed another error two batters later, and Bowden was safe at home after obstruction was called on the catcher, giving Oregon a two-run lead.
Dail set the Aggies down in order in the bottom half to secure the comeback victory and improve to a perfect 8-0 on the season.
At the Plate: Bowden went 2-for-4 and led the Ducks with three RBIs, and Wagner finished 2-for-2 with the two biggest RBIs of the day. Cid also notched two hit, and Bunker finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
In the Circle: It wasn't the sharpest outing for Dail, but the sophomore lefty grinded out her sixth complete game of the season with five strikeouts while allowing five runs on six hits. Dail, who has been a workhorse early on for the Ducks, already led the Pac-12 and was near the top of the national leaderboard in wins before picking up her eighth victory of the season.
GAME TWO – TEXAS TECH 5, OREGON 0
How it Happened: Playing against an undefeated Texas Tech (12-0) team less than 30 minutes after the emotional win over Texas A&M, the Ducks struggled to get going offensively against pitcher Erin Edmoundson (8-0, 1.47 ERA). Oregon scattered three hits, but did not draw a walk and was unable to get a runner past first base against the Red Raiders' ace.
UO starter Maddie MacGrandle was effective early on, allowing just one run through the first three innings on a triple and a wild pitch. Walks came back to bite MacGrandle in the later innings, with Texas Tech scoring two in the fourth on a two-run homer and two in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice and a bases-loaded walk.
At the Plate: Cruse, Cid and junior Bailey Cook all singled to account for Oregon's two hits in the game. Cook, a walk-on who delivered a two-run single on Friday against Army, took advantage of another opportunity with a pinch-hit single in the fifth.
In the Circle: MacGrandle (2-4) struck out eight and allowed just five hits over six innings, her longest outing of the season, but did surrender nine total walks.
What it Means: The young Ducks showed great fight in the first game to come back and beat a Texas A&M team that is ranked or receiving votes in all major polls. Oregon has a chance to get out of Cathedral City with a 4-2 record over a tough six-game schedule if it can finish the weekend with a win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday morning.
Notable: Bowden continued to impress behind the plate, throwing out a runner trying to steal in each of Saturday's games. The sophomore utility player has now thrown out seven runners trying to steal through the first 14 games … Cruse drew two walks against Texas A&M, running her team-best total to 14 on the season … Oregon took the lead in the all-time series against Texas A&M, 6-5.
Up Next: The Ducks will wrap their weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara. The game will be streamed by FloSoftball (subscription required), and KWVA Radio will have the call for both games on 88.1 FM
