Ducks Near Top of the Leaderboard Again
02/19/19 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Oregon remains in fifth place after shooting 1 over in round two of The Prestige Presented by Charles Schwab Tuesday at the PGA West Greg Norman Course. Ryan Gronlund is tied for sixth as an individual at 2 under while Edwin Yi shot the low round of the day for the Ducks with a 2-under 69.
How it Happened: Yi birdied the opening hole but double bogeyed the par-4 third to move to 1 over. He made birdies at the fifth and seventh holes to get back into red figures before trading bogey and birdie at holes eight and nine to shoot 1 under going out. Yi had a steadier back nine, making birdie at 10 and 11 to move to 3 under, but bogeyed hole 14 and followed with four straight pars to sit in a tie for 13th.
In just his second collegiate round, freshman Yin Ho Yue turned in a 1-under 70 and is tied for 17th. He shot a bogey-free 3-under 32 on the front nine with birdies at holes one, two and nine. Yue bogeyed the par-4 11th but bounced back with a birdie at the 12th to get back to 3 under, however bogeys on two of his final four holes moved him back to 2 over for the tournament.
Gronlund got off to a steady start, making a birdie and four pars in his first five holes to get to 3 under overall. He made back-to-back bogeys at six and seven and shot a 1-over 36 going out. Gronlund double bogeyed the par-4 10th to drop to 3 over on the round but birdied three of his last seven holes to shoot an even-par 71.
Kevin Geniza finished with a 3-over 74 and is 5 over for the tournament and in a tie for 32nd. He shot 3 over going out but came home with an even-par 36.
Oregon is 10 shots clear off the sixth place team – the Stanford B Squad – but are three shots behind fifth-place UCLA and down by four shots to third-place Pepperdine. LSU leads the way at 9 under while Stanford's Brandon Wu and UC Davis' Thomas Hutchison share the individual lead at 7 under.
