No. 12 Ducks Sweep Rainbow Wahine
09/13/18 | Women's Volleyball
HONOLULU – The No. 12 Oregon volleyball team got its final week of nonconference play off to a good start on Thursday night with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of Hawai'i in front of 5,288 fans in the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Ducks (6-3) mounted a terrific comeback to win the second set and were led offensively by Lindsey Vander Weide and Ronika Stone in the straight-set victory over the Rainbow Wahine (4-4), UO's first true road win of the season.
Oregon will face Hawai'i again at 10 p.m. PT Friday night in its final match before Pac-12 play begins.
How it Happened: The Oregon offense ran through Stone for most of the first set, as the junior put down six kills on .750 hitting to lead the Ducks to a .464 team hitting percentage. Oregon broke an 11-11 tie with four straight points, two on blocks by Stone, and then used a 3-0 run to push its lead to 19-13. Vander Weide had four kills in the final 12 points to help the Ducks secure a 25-18 win and a 1-0 match lead.
The Ducks got the second set off to a slow start, burning a timeout after Hawai'i jumped out to a 7-1 lead. UO battled back to pull even, 12-12, but the Rainbow Wahine responded with seven in a row to take a 19-12 lead and force Oregon's second timeout. Oregon trailed 21-13 when Vander Weide recorded back-to-back kills to begin the Ducks' comeback attempt. Down by five after a service error, Vander Weide again put down a kill to start an Oregon rally, this time a 7-0 run as the Ducks came all the way back to steal the set, 25-23. UO had an ace and five kills in the final seven points, including three straight by Lauren Page to complete the comeback and send the Ducks into intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Both teams put together scoring runs early in the third set, playing to a 14-14 tie. A Vander Weide kill again ignited a 3-0 Oregon run, and Willow Johnson started another 3-0 run not long after with a kill to give the Ducks a four-point advantage, 21-17. Hawai'i began to mount a late comeback, getting within two at 24-22, but Stone's 12th kill of the night ended the match and gave the Ducks their fifth sweep of the year.
Who Stood Out: Vander Weide led all players with a season-high 15 kills on .375 hitting while adding seven digs and an ace, and Stone hit .500 with 12 kills and a team-best five blocks. Page hit .333 with eight kills, Johnson had seven kills and August Raskie racked up 39 assists to go with four kills, four digs and an ace. Freshmen Brooke Nuneviller (14) and Camryn Tastad (10) both had double-digit digs to lead the back-row defense.
Notable: Oregon is now 6-0 this year when winning the first two sets, 6-0 when leading in attack percentage (.297 - .179), and 5-0 when holding its opponent to worse than .200 hitting … Brooke Van Sickle had an ace to run her team-best total to 17 on the season … The Ducks have now won two straight vs. the Rainbow Wahine, who lead the all-time series 7-3.
