Ducks to Play For Two Regional Titles Monday
10/14/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team will play for two championships at the ITA Northwest Regional after a successful Sunday in Seattle. For a third-consecutive season, the Ducks will have a duo—Joshua Charlton and Thomas Laurent—in the doubles final while sophomore Emmanuel Coste will be the program's first regional finalist since Sven Swinnen in 2004.
The doubles final is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle with the singles championship to follow. Click HERE to watch a live stream of the regional finals.
"Today was a great day for the Ducks," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "Tom and Josh did a great job of bouncing back after the first set and taking over the match. Seeing Manu get through another three setter is a testament to his toughness against the high level of tennis he faced today. There are great things ahead for Manu's career as a Duck."
As a regional finalist, Coste has secured entry into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships (Nov. 7-11) in Surprise, Ariz. Charlton and Laurent can qualify for the national event with a victory; Laurent is already entered in the Fall Championships in singles by way of his quarterfinal run at the ITA All-American earlier this month.
Moving to a best-of-three format for the final two rounds, Oregon dropped the first set to Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer of Washington. However, Charlton and Laurent cruised through the second set and proved too strong in the match tiebreaker to come away with the 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(5) victory. In addition to being the top-seeded team in the tournament, Lam and Sommer are No. 27 in the preseason ITA rankings.
Another Washington pair awaits Charlton and Laurent in Monday's final with Jack Davis and Piers Foley standing between Oregon and its second-consecutive ITA regional doubles title. Laurent won last year's championship alongside former teammate Cormac Clissold (2014-17).
Coste continued his deep run in the singles draw with a straight-set win over Philip Hjorth of Pacific. After playing three setters in each of his first three matches, Coste registered a 6-4, 6-1 win to set up a semifinal date with Yuta Kikuchi of Cal.
The sophomore Duck lost the first set to Kikuchi but steadied to push the match to a decisive third. Coste used a pair of breaks to jump out to a 4-1 advantage and clinched the 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph when Kikuchi sent a backhand into the net.
