Ducks Perfect Start Continues with 4-0 Win Over Georgia State
01/19/18 | Men's Tennis
The Oregon men's tennis team recorded their third straight sweep Friday evening with a 4-0 win over Georgia State.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team kept their perfect start to the season alive defeating Georgia State 4-0 Friday evening at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks' doubles prowess was on display early against the Panthers.
In what looks to be a permanent move to the No. 1 position, the doubles team of sophomore Armando Soemarno and freshman Charles Roberts cruised to a 6-2 win over the Georgia State duo of Quentin Coulaud and Andrei Andrukhu.
Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold clinched the doubles point for the Ducks with a similar 6-2 decision at the No. 2 spot over the No. 56 pair of Kevin Huynh and Giles Hussey.
In singles play, the Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Laurent made quick work of Andrukhou 6-0, 6-2.
Seniors Simon Stevens and Akihiro Tanaka secured the victory for Oregon at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Stevens recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Coulaud while Tanaka downs Jack MacFarlane 6-2, 6-3.
Notable: This is the first time since the 2013 spring season that the Ducks have not dropped a single point to their opponents through the first three matches of the year… The new doubles pair of Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts is paying off major dividends for the Ducks as they won their third match in a row to open the season … Their 3-0 record currently leads all doubles teams for UO … With their singles wins today, Akihiro Tanaka and Simon Stevens have now won seven matches in a row dating back to the fall, the longest active singles winning streak for the Ducks.
Quotable:
Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On his thoughts about the match…
"Doubles was really, really good. No. 1 doubles with Armando [Soemarno] and Charles [Roberts], their energy was great from the first point for both of them. With their energy, it spread and we were pretty solid in doubles today which is great to see. Singles-wise, we get to four [points] in straight sets, we didn't drop a set in either one of the six matches, it was a very convincing 4-0 win to me."
On the doubles pair of Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts…
"[Roberts] is not scared, and it helps to play with Armando who has a lot of experience. I think Armando did a great job today of making a lot of returns and being aggressive. They complement each other very well."
Up Next: The Ducks will travel to Berkeley, Calif., to play in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. UO will face No. 13 Stanford Sunday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. PT.
