Men's Tennis Sweeps Season-Opening Doubleheader
01/12/18 | Men's Tennis
After a shaky start to the day, the Oregon men's tennis team opened the 2018 spring season with back-to-back 7-0 victories over Idaho and Portland State.
EUGENE, ORE. – The Oregon men's tennis enjoyed a perfect start to the 2018 spring season defeating Idaho and Portland State in back-to-back 7-0 sweeps Friday at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks had a shaky start to the 2018 dual season, nearly dropping the doubles point against Idaho. With the teams tied at one point a piece, the all-important doubles point came down to the newly formed pair of Armando Soemarno and freshman Charles Roberts.
The duo mounted an incredible come from behind victory after going down 5-2 early in the match. Soemarno and Roberts proceeded to take the next five straight games to pull out the victory, 7-5, over Lucas Coutinho and Guilherme Scarpelli and earn the doubles point for the Ducks.
In singles play, UO made quick work of the Vandals as freshman Riki Oshima got the scoring going with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at the No. 6 spot in his first-ever appearance for the Ducks.
After winning their doubles match together, senior Simon Stevens and sophomore Ty Gentry closed out the first match undefeated securing singles wins as well. Stevens picked up the win over Carlos Longhi Neto, 6-0, 6-3, from the No. 2 position while Gentry downed Peter Shin, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot.
The Ducks picked up right where they left off against Portland State in their second match of the day.
In their first match as a duo, Akihiro Tanaka and Oshima made quick work of Nathan Boniel and Sam Roberts winning 6-1. Meanwhile the pairs of Soemarno and Roberts and Stevens and Gentry recorded their second doubles wins of the day to secure the doubles point.
In singles play both Tanaka and Oshima won their matches, dropping only one game apiece, by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively. Gentry clinched the match victory for the Ducks at the No. 5 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over PSU's Majeed Bukhari.
Playing at the No. 1 spot for the first time in his career, Stevens grinded out a tough three-set victory over Nathan Boniel, 6-2, 6-7, 11-9, to secure the 7-0 match sweep for the Ducks.
Who Stood Out: Freshman Riki Oshima shined in his UO debut dropping only two games throughout his five total sets on the day … Fellow freshman Charles Roberts and Armando Soemarno went undefeated in doubles play … Akihiro Tanaka opened both of his singles matches with 6-0 sweeps in the first set, he dropped only five games in singles play … After falling behind early in both sets, Cormac Clissold pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Portland State's Avery West to finish the day 2-0 in singles play.
What it Means: With the two wins today, the Ducks open the spring season 2-0 for the eighth straight year.

Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On the Ducks doubles play…
"The afternoon was much better than the morning. In doubles this morning we were really flat … they know they are good in doubles and they thought it was just going to take care of itself. We had to squeak it out pretty unnecessarily, but they rebounded and we played with a lot more urgency in the afternoon."
On the standout play of freshmen Riki Oshima and Charles Roberts…
"RIki [Oshima] did great in singles, he did not give anything away for free. He was rock solid both matches. I think Charles [Roberts] was the best doubles player in the building the whole day. He was very impressive. When we were struggling this morning he took over that match to clinch the doubles point for us."
Senior Simon Stevens
On his three set victory over Nathan Boniel…
"For me today, it was a great opportunity to have a good match against a solid player. I know this is the type of match that can make me feel better for next week. I'm happy I could finish and win this one. It was not easy physically because we had matches this morning, but I ended up feeling good, so that's another positive point."
Up Next: The Ducks close out their three-match home stand to open the season next Friday (Jan. 19) against Georgia State at 5 p.m.
