Ducks Edged Out in Final Home Match

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 37 University of Oregon women's tennis team fell to the No. 18 California Golden Bears 4-3 in a down to the wire match Saturday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center to close out the regular season at home.
The Ducks' record moves to 11-9 overall, 4-4 in Pac-12 play and 5-4 at home. California is now 13-3 overall, 6-1 in the conference, and 5-1 away.
How it Happened: In doubles, junior Nia Rose and senior Marlou Kluiving defeated Denise Starr and Stephane Lin 6-4 in the No. 3 position. The clinch the doubles point, sophomore Shweta Sangwan and freshman Julia Eshet defeated No. 41-ranked Maegan Manasse and Maya Jansen. Junior Alyssa Tobita and freshman Rifanty Kahfiani's match against No. 54 Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic went unfinished.
In singles, Tobita earned the second point for the Ducks of the day with a 6-0, 6-3 win over No. 53 Manasse. California earned their first point of the day with a 6-2, 6-0 win by Jansen over Kluiving. The Golden Bears evened things up 2-2, as Starr took down Rose, 6-4, 6-2. With the fourth finish, sophomore Daniela Nasser had a comeback win in three sets over Maria Smith 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. All three final matches came down to three sets. Playing in the first position, Sangwan battled but fell short to the No. 9 player in the country, Popovic, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. With the score tied at 3-3, it all came down to the final match between Eshet and No. 98 Hauger. In the third set, Hauger was able to outlast Eshet for the Golden Bear victory, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

Looking Ahead: The Ducks will conclude the regular season with two matches on the road. First, Oregon will face Utah in Salt Lake City on Friday, April 14 at 12:30 p.m. PT, followed by a trip to Boulder, Colo., on Sunday, April 16 for a match at 9:00 a.m. PT. The Pac-12 Championships will be held in Ojai, Calif., at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club from April 26-April 29.
