Freshmen Lift No. 9 Ducks Past Seattle, 4-2

Right-hander Maggie Balint struck out 11 in relief to earn her third win of the season
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 ranked Oregon softball team ran its unbeaten string to start the 2017 season to five on Saturday morning, downing Seattle University, 4-2, at the Kajikawa Classic.
The victory over the Redhawks (0-3) marked the lone game of the day for Ducks (5-0) on Day 3 of the tourney hosted by fellow Pac-12 school Arizona State.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon's first four batters of the game all scored, accounting for all of the Ducks' runs in the game.
Freshman Alexis Mack led off the bottom of the first with a walk and stole second. Danica Mercado then reached on an error by the second baseman, moving Mack to third. Oregon's two-hole hitter proceeded to steal second, allowing Mack to score the game's first run on an overthrow by the catcher.
Freshman Mia Camuso followed with her first collegiate home run, a two-run bomb to dead center, and the rout appeared to be on. The next batter, Nikki Udria, promptly singled to right and eventually came home on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by April Utecht, but that would be the end of any meaningful offense for the Ducks.
Seattle scored both of its runs in the top of the second, chasing UO starter Miranda Elish from the circle. The freshman hurler, who breezed through the first inning, allowed a leadoff double and then surrendered a series of bloopers and bleeders, plating two runs and ultimately securing the right-hander's early exit.
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshman Maggie Balint continued her early season dominance, pitching the final five and two-thirds innings in relief to earn her second win in as many games and third overall. Balint inherited a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the second and escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. She finished with 11 punch-outs against just one walk, allowing three hits.
AT THE PLATE: Camuso was UO's offensive standout, going 3-for-3 with two singles, a home run and a pair of stolen bases.
K QUEEN: Balint has fanned 26 in 15.2 innings of work this season. She features an incredible 26:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
UP NEXT: The Ducks final game of the Kajikawa Classic is Sunday, when they face Cal Poly at 8:00 AM PT.
