02/10/17 | Softball
No. 9 Oregon held No. 24 Fresno State to just four hits in a win at the Kajikawa Classic.
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 ranked Oregon softball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 4-1 win over No. 24 ranked Fresno State on Friday afternoon at the Kajikawa Classic.
The Ducks also defeated San Jose State, 8-0, in six innings earlier in the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon threatened to score in the second when Jenna Lilley drew a two-out walk to load the bases. A chopper to short in the next at-bat, however, ended the scoring chance.
The Ducks had the bases loaded with two outs again in the fourth, but this time they capitalized. Junior catcher Gwen Svekis drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the first run of the game before senior shortstop Nikki Udria laced a two-run single to center to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead.
Fresno State picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out solo homer by Maddi Hackbarth but Oregon got the run back in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by freshman Miranda Elish.
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshman Maggie Balint started the game for the Ducks and was outstanding. The right-hander tossed six innings with one run allowed on three hits. She struck out 11 batters and issued no walks before Megan Kleist came in for relief in the seventh. Kleist allowed a walk and a two-out single but held the Bulldogs scoreless for the save.
AT THE PLATE: Nikki Udria led the Ducks with two RBIs and went 2-for-4 at the dish.
FIRST CAREER AT-BAT: Pitcher Megan Kleist was in the lineup at DP against the Bulldogs, her first time hitting for the Ducks. The sophomore singled to short in her first collegiate at-bat in the second inning.
UP NEXT: The Ducks play just one game tomorrow, meeting Seattle U at 8:30 AM PT.
