Buzzer Beater Ends Home Win Streak
12/01/17 | Men's Basketball
Oregon fought back to tie Boise State late, but lost on a halfcourt heave at the buzzer that ended the Ducks' 46-game home win streak.
EUGENE, Ore. — Boise State's Lexus Williams made a three-pointer from midcourt at the buzzer Friday to end Oregon's national-leading home win streak at 46 games, as the Ducks fell 73-70 before 7,688 in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks (5-3) lost for the third time in four games, and dropped a home game for the first time since Dec. 7, 2014. Oregon doubled the previous school record for consecutive home wins of 23, set twice before.
How It Happened: The miracle three-pointer came after a scrappy UO comeback in the final minutes. Boise State (7-1) used a 16-2 run to go up 64-58, prompting Oregon coach Dana Altman to call timeout with 4:35 left. The Ducks got within one at 67-66 on a Payton Pritchard three-pointer, then used a press defense to force a turnover and go up 68-67 on two Pritchard free throws.
The teams then traded empty possessions before Chandler Hutchison made one of two free throws to tie the game. Boise State took the lead on two more free throws, by Chris Sengfelder, with 8.6 seconds left. The Ducks inbounded the ball and Pritchard raced down for a game-tying layup with 4 seconds left, but that was just enough time for Williams to reach the halfcourt line and launch the game-winner.
Early on, the Ducks had trouble cracking Boise State's zone defense, and the Broncos fed big man Zach Haney in the post on the way to an 18-16 lead. But Oregon began to attack the rim, and MiKyle McIntosh scored on back-to-back trips for a 20-18 lead. It remained tight the rest of the first half, with Elijah Brown and Pritchard scoring on consecutive trips late in the half and Oregon taking a 34-30 lead into the break.
Who Stood Out: Pritchard scored 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting, and Brown added 17 points with four assists and three steals. The Ducks missed the presence of freshman forward Troy Brown on the boards, getting outrebounded 33-30.
What It Means: Oregon's early season struggles with a rebuilt roster continued, and now the Ducks have a week off to focus on finals week at the university before returning to competition.
Quotable:
Junior forward Paul White
"To lose a game like that, for this team, we felt like we needed this win. So for us to lose in that fashion, it hurts."
Sophomore guard Payton Pritchard
"Coming down, I let him go strong hand, and he pulls up from halfcourt and swishes a three from halfcourt. Not much you can really do."
Head coach Dana Altman
"We'll learn to play together, but the physicality of the game, the defense, the rebounding, that's gotta improve. It comes down to toughness, and it comes down to leadership. We've got to get more out of our older guys."
Notable: Boise State was 0-of-8 from three-point range, but Williams' buzzer-beater made the Broncos 7-of-11 in the second half. … Troy Brown did not dress after experiencing concussion symptoms following the Oklahoma game. … A moment of silence was held prior to the game for Steve "Snapper" Jones, the UO alum and former NBA player and commentator who passed away in late November. … Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard watched the game from courtside.
Up Next: The Ducks return to action against Colorado State in Matthew Knight Arena next Friday (7 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
