12/08/17 | Men's Basketball
Oregon took a step forward by dominating the glass and shooting .657 in the second half to beat Colorado State after losing three of the last four.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon men's basketball team dominated the glass and shot 65.7 percent in the second half Friday to kick off a stretch of four games in nine days by beating Colorado State, 95-65, before 7,153 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: The Ducks (6-3) exploded in the second half after leading 38-32 at halftime. The Rams (4-6) were still within 10 at 51-41 when Keith Smith's putback extended the UO lead to 12, and Elijah Brown made it 55-41 with two free throws. After CSU's Prentiss Nixon made one-of-two free throws, Brown and Payton Pritchard made back-to-back three-pointers, and Oregon was up by 19. The Ducks put it away with a 17-3 run to an 86-50 lead, a burst that included two three-pointers by Brown, another by MiKyle McIntosh and a thunderous alley-oop from Brown to Kenny Wooten.
Early on, Oregon showed a hint of things to come by jumping out to a 22-10 lead. Victor Bailey Jr. hit a three-pointer to cap an 8-0 run and give the Ducks that 12-point advantage. But the Rams, who had double-digit offensive rebounds in all but one game entering Friday, began to fight back when Nico Carvacho put back a miss and added a free throw for a three-point play. That was the first of five straight makes by the Rams, the last a three-pointer by Nixon to keep them within 28-24.
Who Stood Out: Brown scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half, including nine of Oregon's points during a 14-3 run that made it 77-47. Brown made all six of his field-goal attempts after halftime, four from three-point range, and also dished out six assists in the second half. He led six Ducks who scored in double figures, with Kenny Wooten adding 13 points — all in the second half.
What It Means: The Ducks came into the game having lost three of four and asking themselves tough questions about the trajectory of the season, but made a nice statement about their intent to turn things around Friday night.
Quotable:
UO coach Dana Altman
"The first half was kind of a grind. I thought we had a lot of really good looks we didn't hit …. We just weren't playing with tremendous confidence on the offensive end. But in the second half, I thought our depth was something they had some trouble with."
Freshman wing Troy Brown Jr.
"We know we're a lot better than what we've been proving. Everybody's all aboard to make the plays we can and help the team improve."
Notable: The Rams had been averaging nearly 13 offensive rebounds but had just six Friday. … That owed in part to UO freshman Troy Brown Jr. and his 10 rebounds in his return from a concussion. … Brown added 12 points for his first career double-double. … The Ducks had 18 assists against 10 turnovers, and a 41-27 edge on the boards. … Among Altman's few critiques of the performance were Oregon's 25 fouls, a continuing issue in the early going this season.
Up Next: The Ducks remain at home to face Texas Southern in Matthew Knight Arena on Monday (7 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
