11/05/17 | Men's Tennis
The Oregon men's tennis team capped off their fall season Sunday winning two championship trophies at the Minnesota Gopher Invitational.
How It Happened: The Ducks closed out their final tournament of the fall season winning both the gold and the maroon draw championships at the Gopher Invite.
With their wins today, the Ducks finished tournament play 23-1 dropping only one doubles match throughout the three day tournament.
In the maroon draw finals the duo of senior Simon Stevens and sophomore Ty Gentry squared off against Notre Dame's Guillermo Cabrera and William Howells. The Ducks were victorious in doubles play, 6-4, before moving on to singles play in the best-of-three championship draw.
Despite going into tiebreaker sets, both Stevens and Gentry rallied to pull out wins by scores of 6-3, 0-6 (10-8) and 6-3, 4-6 (10-2), respectively, to earn the championship title.
On the other side of the tournament, in the gold draw, senior Akihiro Tanaka and junior Ethan Young-Smith looked to make it a clean sweep for the Ducks facing Denver's Sean Huynh and Aaron Diemer.
The Pioneer pair nearly took the opening point over the Ducks in doubles play, but Tanaka and Young-Smith managed to grind out a win, 7-6(3), to take the lead heading into singles play.
In singles play, Tanaka and Young-Smith secured the gold draw championship with straight-set wins, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2, over Huynh and Diemer, respectively.
At the ITA Fall National Championships senior Cormac Clissold and junior Thomas Laurent closed out the tournament in the consolation doubles championship against Oliver Crawford and Chase Perez-Blanco of Florida.
The Duck duo fought to end the fall season on a high note, but ultimately fell to the Gator pair, 6-2, 6-3.

On the Ducks play at the Gopher Invitational…
"Overall it was a solid weekend. There was a lot of tennis, which is exactly what we want this time of year. I thought they applied many of the things we have been working on in practice, which is what you want to see as a coach. That being said, we still have a lot of things to improve on before we start the dual season in January, but we are moving in the right direction."
Up Next: With the fall season officially over for the Ducks, the team returns to Eugene to begin preparation for the spring season in January.
