Ducks' Defense Shuts Down Oklahoma

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 10 Oregon women's basketball team used a first quarter run to take the lead and never looked back in a 92-74 win against Oklahoma on Saturday in front of 6,033 fans at Matthew Knight Arena.
Oregon (5-1) used a double-double from Ruthy Hebard, her second of the season, and an all-around effort by Sabrina Ionescu to take down the Sooners.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oklahoma scored the first basket of the game, but Oregon responded with a run to take a 9-2 lead on a Ionescu jumper with 6:20 left in the quarter. Oklahoma cut into the UO lead, making it 11-9 with 2:06 to go, but Maite Cazorla and Lexi Bando hit back-to-back three-pointers and Oregon owned a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
It was back-and-forth in the second quarter until the Ducks used an 8-2 run going into halftime and led Oklahoma, 48-34. Oregon shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the first half and were led by Justine Hall and Ionescu's 10 points each. Hall tallied a four-point play in the second quarter after getting fouled on a corner three.
Oklahoma cut the Oregon lead to 10 points at 61-51 with 41 seconds left in the third by the Ducks scored two quick buckets to take a 65-51 lead into the fourth quarter. After a steal, Ionescu sprinted down the floor and hit a layup at the buzzer to end the third quarter.
Oregon led by as much as 23 points in the fourth quarter before winning the game, 92-74.
WHO STOOD OUT: Hebard posted her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Ionescu posted a team-high 28 points, one off her career-best, along with seven rebounds and six assists. Cazorla tallied a team-high eight assists and is now averaging seven assists per game.
PK80: The game was part of the PK80 women's basketball doubleheader at Matthew Knight Arena. No. 1 UConn defeated Michigan State earlier in the day.
CROWD: The announced crowd of 6,033 is the second largest women's basketball crowd at Matthew Knight Arena. It is the 20th largest crowd all-time for a UO women's hoops home game.
PERIMETER DEFENSE: Oklahoma entered Saturday's game shooting 40 percent from three on the season but went just 1-of-21 (4.8%) from long range against the Ducks. The Sooners shot just 34.8 percent overall in the loss.
QUALITY FOES: After being ranked early in the season, Oklahoma was receiving votes in the most recent Associated Press top-25 poll. Four of Oregon's six opponents (Drake, Texas A&M, Louisville and Oklahoma) thus far have been ranked or receiving votes.
UP NEXT: Oregon hosts Hampton on Nov. 28 at 6 PM.
