Ducks Rally Behind Lindsey Vander Weide and Taylor Agost To Down Redhawks
SEATTLE, Wash. – After a tough loss in the opening set, the Oregon volleyball team rebounded to win its first road match of the season, 26-28, 25-12, 25-17, 25-16, over Seattle on Tuesday night at Connolly Complex.
How It Happened: The Ducks (4-2) fought through some early errors to recover from a loss in set one, rallying behind strong nights from Lindsey Vander Weide and Taylor Agost to claim their fourth consecutive win. Vander Weide set a new career-high with 18 digs while adding 10 kills and three aces to record her third double-double of the season, and Agost tied her career-high with 17 kills while hitting an efficient .517. Freshman standout Ronika Stone added 10 kills and two blocks, and fellow freshman Brooke Van Sickle finished with nine kills, three blocks and eight digs.
After being outhit in the first set by Seattle (4-3), the Ducks found their groove in the final three to finish with a hitting percentage of .307 to the Redhawks' .174. Oregon finished with 53 assists behind 32 from Maggie Scott and 16 from August Raskie, and the Ducks finished with 69 digs to Seattle's 48 with Benson (20) and Vander Weide leading the way. The Ducks added six aces and six blocks.
Set 1: The opening set was a back-and-forth battle throughout. The Ducks opened the match with four straight points, but the Redhawks rallied to go on a 6-1 run to eventually take a 9-7 lead. Oregon went on another 4-0 run to go up 11-9 when things began to even out. The two teams traded points until the Ducks eventually had set point at 24-23. A Seattle kill and an Oregon error erased a pair of set points for UO, and the Redhawks would rally to win the first set, 28-26, with the Ducks' seventh attack error of the game finishing things off. Agost led the Ducks with five kills on eight swings in the opening set, and Stone had three kills and a block.
Set 2: The Ducks regrouped from a tough opening-set loss to control the second game from the start. After an early 1-1 tie, Oregon led the entire way, allowing Seattle to score consecutive points just twice. The 25-12 win to even the match up heading to intermission was highlighted by an 8-0 run that included six kills, with three coming from Agost. Vander Weide, Van Sickle and Agost each had four kills in the set to lead the Ducks, and Benson added two service aces.
Set 3: Tied 6-6 early in the match, the Ducks went on a 7-2 run to go ahead for good. Seattle scored three unanswered to get within two at 13-11 before Agost erupted for three consecutive kills, extending the Oregon lead to five and forcing a Redhawk timeout. The Ducks would then score five of the next seven before the two teams went back and forth en route to a 25-17 Oregon win. Agost and Stone each put down five kills in the set, and Vander Weide led with six digs and an ace.
Set 4: The Ducks enjoyed a strong start in the final game, racing out to an 8-3 lead. Oregon wouldn't allow Seattle to gain any momentum, as the Redhawks scored consecutive points just twice for the second set of the match. Vander Weide put down four kills, including scoring the final point of the match to give the Ducks the win and secure her third double-double of the year.
What It Means: The Ducks built off the momentum they generated last weekend in the Oregon Classic, where they picked up three consecutive sweeps. Oregon also showed its ability to regroup after adversity, as the Ducks hit .161 with seven attack errors in the first set before making a drastic improvement with just 10 errors over the final three sets. The Ducks had a sideout percentage over 75 percent in each of the last three games after posting just a 64 percent mark in the first. The Ducks have now won 12 of their last 13 sets.
Up Next: The Ducks will return home this weekend for their final non-conference action of the regular season, welcoming No. 21 Illinois, Belmont and Saint Mary's to Matthew Knight Arena for the Nike Invitational. The Ducks will play their first match of the tournament on Friday at 7 p.m. PT against Illinois on Pac-12 Networks.
