4x400 Adds Third Penn Wheel
05/01/16 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's 4x400 team earned the third Penn Relays victory of the weekend as the track and field team wrapped up competition at the Penn Relays and OSU High Performance Meet, Saturday.
The 4x400 squad of Ashante Horsley, Deajah Stevens, Brooke Feldmeier and Raevyn Rogers sprinted to a win in 3:30.11, the fastest time for the Ducks this season and No. 7 in the NCAA. The strength of Oregon's 800-meter specialists was on display as Feldmeier gave the Ducks the lead heading into the third exchange and Rogers waited patiently before shutting the door on the competition in the final 100 meters of her anchor leg.
It was a big meet for Rogers, who was named the Athlete of the Meet in the women's relay events. Rogers anchored the Ducks to victory in the 4x400 and did the same on Friday with a smooth 800-meter leg in the sprint medley relay. The sophomore joins Matthew Centrowitz (2010), Anne Kesselring (2012) and Edward Cheserek (2014) as Relay Athletes of the Meet.
Oregon entered the week with 10 relay championships in meet history and added three more this year, also winning the women's 4x100 on Friday. Three wagon wheels are the most the Ducks have ever brought home in one trip.
In the individual events, Sasha Wallace won the women's 100 hurdles with a time of 13.24, edging out Megan Simmonds of Utech who had an identical time. Alaysha Johnson finished third in 13.28.
In the women's 100, Jasmine Todd and Danielle Barbian went 3-4, crossing the finish line in 11.55 and 11.70, respectively.
In Corvallis, Ben Thiel earned a win for the Ducks in the 400 hurdles in 53.02. His teammate Schuller Rettig was third in 55.32 while Khadejah Jackson also finished third in the women's 400 hurdles (1:01.05).
In the throws, Itohan Aikhionbare finished second in both the shot put (52-3.75/15.94m) and discus (169-0.25/51.51m) while Annie Whitfield placed fourth in the javelin with a mark of 139-9.75/42.61m.
Drake Brennan highlighted the men's throws group in the discus. After Cullen Prena surpassed 180 feet in the event on Thursday at the Titan Twilight, Brennan set a big personal best of 180-8.75 (55.08m) to take third on Saturday.
Christian Sourapas and Cameron Stone notched a couple of third-place finishes in the sprints. Sourapas led the Ducks with a time of 21.93 in the 200, followed by Jack Galpin in fourth, and Stone finished the 400 in 48.33.
Ben Milligan cleared 6-10.25 (2.09m) in the high jump for second place with teammate Bradley Laubacher in third at 6-8.25 (2.04m).
Oregon will finish the weekend at the Paton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, Calif., Sunday. The Ducks will have competitors in the 1,500, steeplechase and 5,000 beginning at 4:38 p.m.
