04/21/16 | Men's Tennis
HOW IT HAPPENED: For the first time since January, the Ducks (18-7) failed to secure the doubles point to open the match. The Cardinal (14-9) took victories on courts one and two to clinch the point. Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens were topped by David Wilczynski/Nolan Paige at No. 2 while 35th-ranked duo Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno had their eight match winning streak snapped by No. 39 Tom Fawcett/Maciek Romanowicz in the top spot.
Trailing 1-0 in the match, Oregon was unable to secure the victories needed in singles. Amos fell for just the third time this spring as Nolan Paige won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Almost immediately after, Cormac Clissold lost 6-4, 6-4 to Romanowicz at No. 5. The Cardinal then clinched the match at No. 1 when No. 12 Tom Fawcett won in straight sets over Maasland.
In the unfinished matches, Simon Stevens had taken down Michael Genender 6-3 in the first set at No. 2 and was tied at 4-4 in the second. On court three, Thomas Laurent was leading 3-1 in the third set with No. 77 Wilczynski. Laurent won 6-1 in the first set and then fell 6-1 in the second to go to the deciding set. At No. 6, Ethan Young-Smith dropped the first set 7-5 to Sameer Kumar and was tied at 1-all in the second.
UP NEXT: The Ducks await their fate as they hope to make the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Regionals will take place May 13-14.
