Ducks Overpower Hawkeyes for Third Straight
02/21/16 | Women's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – The Oregon women's tennis team won its third-straight match on Saturday, downing the previously undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes, 4-1, in a neutral-site match at the Headington Tennis Center.
How It Happened: The Ducks (5-2) carried the momentum from Friday's 4-1 win at Oklahoma into Saturday's contest and started strong, claiming wins over the Hawkeyes (6-1) on courts one and three to claim the doubles point.
The tandem of Kennan Johnson and Shweta Sangwan took down Zoe Douglas and Annette Dohanics, 6-4, to pick up its second win of the weekend and seventh as a duo. Marlou Kluiving and Christi Woodson won a 10-8 tiebreaker over Iowa's Natalie Looney and Aimee Tarun to help the Ducks clinch the point.
In singles, the Ducks got straight-set wins in the top three singles positions to seal up the victory.
Playing in the No. 1 position for the second time this season, Kennan Johnson took down Anastasia Reimchen, 6-3, 6-4, for her 12th overall win as a Duck. After taking her first set over Dohanics in a 7-4 tiebreaker, sophomore Nia Rose finished off the Hawkeye with a 6-1 second set to take the match on No. 2. Alyssa Tobita moved to 5-0 in dual play Saturday as she knocked off Iowa's Kristen Thoms in the third singles spot.
Iowa picked up its lone point of the match on No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-2 Aimee Tarun win over Marlou Kluiving.
The match was suspended as soon as the Ducks clinched. Sangwan was entering her third set against Iowa's Douglas on No. 4, while Woodson was knotted at one game in her third set with Looney on No. 5.
Quotable - Head Coach Alison Silverio: "This weekend was a complete team effort. Different individuals stepped up on both days. There are many little victories achieved when everyone becomes a part of the solution, and we can rely on each other physically and mentally."
Up Next: The Ducks will wrap up their road-heavy February schedule next weekend when they travel to Manoa, Hawaii to play UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 27) and Hawaii (Feb. 28).
