Ducks Split Another Pair in Cajun Country
02/21/16 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. — For the second straight day, Oregon lost the opener and won the nightcap at the 30th Louisiana Classics at Lamson Park. The No. 6 Ducks started the day off with host No. 7 Louisiana, falling 5-4, before rebounding with an 8-0 thrashing of Central Arkansas in six innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cajuns (7-1) built a quick 5-1 lead to chase reigning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Cheridan Hawkins (3-2) after just 2 2/3 innings of work. The Ducks (7-3) gradually climbed back into the game behind stellar relief work from Megan Kleist and timely defense, but were never able to fully solve ULL righty Alex Stewart (5-0). UO's best chance came in the sixth, when Geri Ann Glasco doubled with one out, advancing Janelle Lindvall - the potential tying run - to third base. Stewart coaxed a pop out from Gwen Svekis before Sammie Puentes lined out to end the threat. Nikki Udria led the Ducks with two hits, including her team-high fourth home run of the season.
Oregon didn't let its disappointment in defeat linger as the Ducks scored early and often to run rule Central Arkansas (5-2). Janelle Lindvall started the scoring with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the second, and Lauren Lindvall ended the game with a bases-loaded hit to the left-centerfield wall, driving home the eighth and final run in the bottom of the sixth. Glasco (1-0) was nearly perfect in the circle and didn't allow a hit until the sixth. She walked two and struck out six in a one-hit shutout.
WHAT IT MEANS: The Ducks were tested and came up on the short end of their three-game series with the Cajuns. The series had a Super Regional feel to it, which should only benefit both clubs later in the year. UO still has a chance at a winning weekend with one game left to play on Sunday.
WHOA NELLY: Janelle Lindvall continued her climb up UO's career home run and RBI lists. The senior backstop moved into a tie for sixth all-time with her 35th HR and now ranks fourth in RBIs at Oregon with 147.
EIGHT IS ENOUGH: UO's eight runs against the Bears were scored by eight different players, although only four players combined for the squad's eight RBIs.
UP NEXT: Oregon and UCA will meet again Sunday at 10 a.m. at Lamson Park.
