Sand Defeats Cal Poly in Split

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon sand volleyball team earned its first win of the season, Saturday, defeating Cal Poly 3-2 in an exciting day at the Stanford Invitational. Each of the Ducks' four matches were decided by a single point.
Oregon received wins at No. 2 and No. 4 against Cal Poly, with seniors Liz Brenner and Shellsy Ashen battling Nicole Kessler and Caihla Petiprin at the second spot. Ashen/Brenner won 21-16 in the first set and 21-12 in the second.
Natalie Bookout Gonzalez and Frankie Shebby capped off an undefeated tournament at No. 4 with a straight-set win at No. 4, 21-17, 21-19, but losses at No. 1 and No. 3 for the Ducks resulted in a dramatic finish for the women at No. 5.
Marine Hall-Poirier and Roni LaPierre won their first set against Shannon Fouts and Casey Carroll, 21-18 before dropping the second set, 21-19. The Ducks duo responded with a win in the third 15-12 to seal the match.
In the first match of the day, Oregon was on the wrong end of the 3-2 scoreline against California. The Ducks again got a three-set win from Bookout Gonzlaez/Shebby, and Ashen/Brenner went undefeated on the day with a 17-21, 25-23, 16-14 comeback win against Bryce Bark and Emily Shults.
However the two wins would not be enough as the three other matches were decided in straight sets by California.
The Ducks will return to competition, Tuesday, when they play Oregon State in Corvallis at 6:30 p.m.
