Ducks Edged in Doubleheader

STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon sand volleyball team dropped a pair of close matches at the Stanford Invitational, Friday, falling to Stanford 3-2 before going down against Saint Mary's by the same score.
In the match against Stanford, Oregon received points from the bottom of the lineup as Natalie Bookout Gonzalez and Fankie Shebby defeated Inky Ajanaku and Grace Kennedy 21-19, 21-14 at the No. 4 position.
Portland State transfer Roni LaPierre and freshman Marine Hall-Poirier also earned a point at No. 5 defeating Kelsey Humphreys and Catherine Raquel 21-19, 21-18.
The Cardinal won two points at No. 1 and No. 3 to level the score with Liz Brenner and Chelsey Keoho battling Madi Bugg and Ivana Vanjak at No. 2. Brenner/Keoho won the first set 23-21 but the Stanford pair rallied to force a third and continued by clipping the Ducks 16-14.
In the evening match against Saint Mary's, the Ducks again got points from Nos. 4-5. LaPierre/Hall-Poirier cruised to a win at No. 5, 21-7, 21-3 put Oregon on the board and Bookout Gonzalez/Shebby won in straight sets, 21-18, 22-20.
This time two matches went into three sets as the No. 3 team of Taylor Agost and Maggie Scott battled back after a first set loss to win 21-19 in the second but fell 15-12 in the third.
The No. 1 team of California natives Shellsy Ashen and Kacey Nady won the first set in extra points at 26-24, but the Gaels' team of Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmons won the second set 21-15 and the third by a score of 15-12.
Oregon will play another doubleheader on Saturday with matches against California at 9 a.m. and Cal Poly at noon.
