Records Fall in 23-12 Win vs. OSU

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team used a 12-run fifth inning and broke the single-game scoring record in a 23-12 five-inning run-rule win over rival Oregon State in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday at rainy Howe Field.
Freshman Gwen Svekis drove in a school record nine runs in the game to pace the Ducks. She hit a three-run homer in the first, smacked a two-RBI triple in the third and hit a grand slam in the Ducks' 12-run fifth.
The Ducks improved to 22-3 (2-0 Pac-12) with the victory while the Beavers slipped to 19-8 (0-2). Oregon has now won eight straight games against its rivals.
How It Happened: Oregon State started the scoring with four runs on a pair of homers in the top of the first. The Ducks answered right back with a run on a dropped third strike before Svekis ripped a three-run home run to right center.
The Beavers took the lead once again in the second, 7-4, as a pair of errors led to three runs. After being held scoreless in the bottom of the second, the Ducks scored seven runs in the third to take an 11-7 lead. Svekis had a two RBI triple in the third before Koral Costa hit her team-leading seventh homer of the year.
The Beavers came right back with a five-run top of the fourth to take a 12-11 advantage. Natalie Hampton hit a grand slam in the frame, her first hit of the season.
That set up the Ducks' huge 12-run fourth inning. After Nikki Udria, who went 3-for-4 in the game, singled to load the bases, Alyssa Gillespie drew her third walk of the game to push in a run. Danica Mercado scored on a wild pitch next before Jenna Lilley roped a two-run double. Hailey Decker drew a walk two batters later to drive in another run which brough Svekis to the plate. With five RBIs already on a triple and a homer, the freshman broke the school record for RBIs after crushing a grand slam to right center. The grand slam gave her nine RBIs in the game. Oregon wasn't done scoring, as Sammie Puentes hit a pinch hit two-run single and Janie Takeda drove in another with a single.
Records Fall: The Ducks' 23 runs are the most ever in single-game school history and Svekis' nine RBIs are the most in program history as well. With 35 combined runs, it was the highest scoring Civil War, breaking the previous mark of 29 set in 1975, a 19-10 UO victory. The Ducks drew 13 walks in the game, the most in school history, breaking the previous record of 11.
Quoteable: "Gwen's been hitting the ball well and making it hard on me to keep her out of the lineup," said head coach Mike White. "She's doing such a great job and even catching pretty well.”
Fun Fact: The Ducks only needed 14 hits to score 23 runs as they drew a school record 13 walks from OSU pitchers.
