MBB Quotes v. Washington
02/05/15 | Men's Basketball
Dana Altman -- Head Coach
On the game coming down to the last possession for the second game in a row...
"We always wait for th last possession. We just have to guard better, that's obvious to everybody. If you look at our seven losses they've all been defensive related, we're giving up a lot of points. Today our shooting percentage was good and we hit free throws and everything was good on the offensive end, but defensively they shot 56 percent and you can't do that, not in February.
On the final defensive possession...
"We knew they were going to spread the court way out and try to drive or even look for a three, so we went with the little quicker lineup."
On the progression of the team...
"We've made progress. At least now we know when we make mistakes. Earlier I don't even think we knew, so at least we know a little bit now. I think we're a little bit stuck in the mud. People have driven it at us and we haven't stopped it. We have to get some confidence in pratice."
Joseph Young – Oregon Guard, Senior
On hitting the go-ahead basket late in the game…
“It's my teammates. I think Elgin (Cook) set the last screen and that really opened the drive for me to make the play. Tonight was really just everybody helping each other. We had some defensive plays that we didn't complete, but we're getting better and better. We just have to go to practice and work hard from there.”
On Coach Altman's message going into the final defensive possession…
“He just said play solid defense, talk, communicate, and don't switch. We did the principles and we didn't do any switching and we just played the ball well and got the steal.”
On reaching 2,000 career points…
“I didn't know. I wasn't worried about it. The main focus is getting the win and celebrating with the team at the end. We pulled it out with a good defensive play at the end and we just have to build from there.”
Elgin Cook – Oregon Forward, Junior
On what this win means…
“It was really big for us. It was like a bounce back game. We took a bad loss to Arizona and we just wanted to come together as a team and ride it out and grind it out.”
On the absence of Robert Upshaw for Washington…
“It was a really big difference. Upshaw's a good player. I know when I went in and watched it he blocked like three or four of my shots so when I got in the paint I really wasn't worried on getting my shots blocked. I just kept my eyes on the rim and finished.”
On his development as a scorer…
“It's just execution. We're executing the plays. When I set a screen everybody is collapsing on Joe and it's giving me room to work and my teammates are finding me.”
Lorenzo Romar – Washington Head Coach
On the overall game…
“Joseph Young did his thing, but aside from that we still had too many defensive lapses. They are a good offensive team and sometimes good offensive teams force you into those lapses, but we didn't control the situations defensively that we could have controlled, and that hurt us. Offensively I thought we did a fine job, we shot the ball, got in the paint and got a lot of layups. We took care of the basketball for the most part, but we didn't pull it out.”
On the inbounds play late in the fourth quarter…
“We were going to try to come off a double screen, and if Shawn (Kemp Jr.) was open we were going to hit Shawn. If Shawn wasn't, we were going to go back to Donaven (Dorsey) for maybe a three.”
On the defensive lapses…
“Those lapses hurt us in the first half when we got into rotation situations; we didn't find someone to put a body on to box out. So they scored 11 points in the first half off second-chance points, and a couple of those were 3's I believe. That hurt us a little bit, but I thought we made some improvements in this game (from their game against California on Feb. 1). It took Joseph Young to explode in the second half for us not to win that game.”
