EUGENE, Ore — The No. 15 Oregon men's basketball team held off a furious rally by Fresno State on Monday evening before 5,250 in Matthew Knight Arena, winning 78-73 to remain unbeaten through six games.
How It Happened: The Ducks (6-0) led by double digits at halftime, 37-25, and took their largest lead of the game at 55-36 on a Chris Boucher three-pointer early in the second half. Oregon then went nearly 10 minutes in which the lead never was less than 13 points, and Dillon Brooks made it 70-52 with a jumper at 6:35 to play.
But the Bulldogs (5-1) were not about to suffer their first loss of the season without a fight. They scored 11 straight points to get within 70-63, and the Ducks then wasted a chance to put the game away by missing 3-of-5 free-throw attempts. Fresno State capitalized as Marvelle Harris made a three-pointer to cut Oregon's lead to 72-68 with 1:51 left. But Brooks scored to end a stretch of 5:15 for the Ducks without a field goal, and he dove on a loose ball at the other end to deny the comeback bid.
Oregon began the game by scoring the first 11 points and denying Fresno State on its first seven field-goal attempts. The middle of the half devolved into a flurry of turnovers and quick three-point attempts, but the Ducks finished well and led 37-25 on a Casey Benson basket in the waning moments of the half. Oregon held the Bulldogs to 29 percent shooting in the first half, though that spiked to 50 percent in the second.
Who Stood Out: Brooks posted his second double-double of the season, with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Boucher and Elgin Cook added 14 points, and Boucher contributed five rebounds and five blocked shots. Tyler Dorsey scored 12 points.
What It Means: The Ducks held serve after being elevated to No. 15 in The Associated Press top 25 earlier in the day. But now they'll head out on the road for three games, the next test for a team that at times looks ahead of where it was at this point last season, but has had issues with consistency.
Quotable:
Dana Altman, UO coach
On Brooks' play in the final two minutes
“He did make some big plays there. You have to have somebody make some plays, and he did down the stretch. There were plenty of opportunities earlier in the half we didn't take advantage of, but he definitely made some plays down the stretch.”
On the Ducks' start
“I thought the first half we played very well, very hard, except for our 11 turnovers — and (on) really bad decisions. But definitely I thought our activity was good. We were up two on the boards. You take out the 11 turnovers, I thought we played well.”
Notable: NBA rookie and program alum Joseph Young was courtside for the game along with his Indiana Pacers teammate Paul George, who attended Fresno State. … Sophomore Jordan Bell dressed for the game and participated in warmups but did not play. He has yet to appear in a game this season due to a foot injury. Trevor Manuel also sat out the game due to a hip issue, though he was available if necessary, Altman said.… Oregon's 17 turnovers were a season high.
Up Next: The Ducks play at UNLV on Friday (8 p.m., ESPN2).
