Ducks Show Strong Play on Day One of the ITA Regional Championships

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon men's tennis team won four singles matches and one doubles contest on the opening day of the ITA Regional Championships.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first round of singles matches kicked things off at the tournament. Bartosz Sawicki squeaked by Portland State's Ian Risenhoover 7-6 (7-2) in the first set before blanking him in the second set 6-0 to move on.
Also in a tight contest was Ethan Young-Smith who dropped the opening set to Roy Lederman of Stanford 6-4, before battling back and taking the next two, 6-3, 7-5.
Simon Stevens and Jayson Amos each had an easier time with their opponents. Stevens won 6-2, 6-2 over Gonzaga's Vicente Vara while Amos put down Jerod Mah of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-1.
Sawicki, Young-Smith, Stevens and Amos will all continue on in the winner's bracket tomorrow. Joining them will be Daan Maasland, who was awarded a bye in today's first round.
In doubles play, only one Duck duo was in action as two others received first round byes. Newly formed pair Brent Chin/Bartosz Sawicki won 8-4 over Ethan Lopez/Brent Wheeler (Portland State). They'll play tomorrow as well as duos Daan Maasland/Simon Stevens and Jayson Amos/Armando Soemarno.
