EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team made it two in a row on Saturday when they beat Eastern Washington in the afternoon match at the Student Tennis Center 7-0.
How It Happened: UO got off to another fast start in the overall match with a victory in doubles. Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos cruised by Eduardo Martinez and Eduardo Bringhold 6-0 on court one, and the No. 2 doubles team of Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens sealed the point with a 6-3 victory over Eastern Washington's Robert Dula and Vuk Vukovic.
Amos – playing at No. 2 – was the first to win in singles when he worked his way past Vukovic 6-1, 6-1 to make the overall score 2-0 in favor of the Ducks. Sardu earned his second singles win of the day and defeated Martinez on court three 6-1, 6-0.
Blake Anthony, who was also making his first appearance with the Ducks since transferring from Indiana, gave the Ducks the victory on court six when he topped Luke Thompson 6-3, 6-3 and made the score 4-0.
UO played out the rest of the singles matches and duplicated their result from this morning. Stevens handled Wacil Bendjelti 6-4, 6-1 in the battle of the No. 4's and Maasland came away victorious over Robert Dula on court one 6-0, 6-4.
No. 5 Cormac Clissold competed in the closest singles match of the day, but the freshman came out on top over Bringhold 7-5, 6-3.
What It Means: The Ducks took care of business and finished the day without dropping a set against Seattle U and Eastern Washington. UO will have one more weekend at home (Jan. 17) before they will be tested on the road against one of the best teams in the country in No. 6 North Carolina on Jan. 23 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“We need to play doubles with better energy. We won it, but it wasn't as clean as I would like it to be. But in the afternoon match I thought the singles play was really solid, so that was encouraging.”
Daniel Sardu – on moving into sole possession of fourth place at UO in career singles wins.
“I think it's all about the team. It's great that I got the wins this morning and in the afternoon, but it's all about the team and I am glad we won both matches today.”
Next Up: The Oregon men's tennis team will return to the friendly confines of the Student Tennis Center next weekend and play Loyola Marymount at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17
