EUGENE, Ore. — Down 14 with less than seven minutes left in regulation, the Oregon women's basketball team rallied to tie it and then beat Santa Clara in double overtime, 92-88, on Thursday evening before 1,245 in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: For most of regulation, the only signs of life from the Ducks (6-3) were during an 11-0 run to take a 22-15 lead midway through the first half. Otherwise, the Broncos (5-4) generally were in control, using a mix of fastbreaks on which the Ducks couldn't stop the ball, or a high-low post game when forced to play in the halfcourt. Santa Clara's biggest lead came with 5:48 to play, as the Broncos went up 69-55.
From there the tide turned completely, as the Ducks employed halfcourt pressure that sparked them at the other end. Oregon scored the next 13 straight, including a three-pointer by Lexi Bando as the shot clock expired, and a Jillian Alleyne free throw that bounced high off the back iron and through the net. The run ended with a Santa Clara free throw to put the Broncos up 70-68 with 17 seconds left, but Lexi Petersen's layup with six seconds left forced overtime.
Oregon was down two again in the final minute of the first overtime, when Amanda Delgado got to the basket to make it 76-76 and force another extra period. The Ducks led that nearly throughout, going ahead for good when Alleyne was triple-teamed, the ball squirted loose and Tatum Neubert laid it in. Drea Toler scored on Oregon's next possession, Bando added another basket just as the shot clock expired and Petersen made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:18 for the win.
Who Stood Out: Bando kept the Ducks in the game while her teammates struggled for much of regulation. The freshman from Eugene had 23 of her 28 points in regulation, and 20 of those came prior to the 13-0 run that got Oregon back into the game. Alleyne tied the conference record with her 18th straight double-double, notching 16 points and 20 rebounds despite playing with four fouls the final 6:48 of regulation and all of overtime. Petersen added 24 points in 43 minutes, while Bando and Alleyne each played 47. Toler led the Ducks with five points and sparked the late defensive surge with her pressure on the ball. Neubert had just two points and four rebounds, but she rounded out the UO lineup with Bando, Petersen, Alleyne and Toler late in regulation and during key stretches of overtime.
What It Means: Two games after outscoring Navy 48-19 in the second half of an eight-point win, the Ducks showed again that they can come out swinging with their backs against the wall. Another slow start Thursday was troubling, and something Oregon won't be able to afford most nights in conference play. But it's nice to survive that mistake in yet another victory.
Quotable: "It's hard to say what exactly clicked," Petersen said. "But on our team we have a lot of toughness. Going through what a lot of us have been through at Oregon, we want to win games. We know we have that opportunity with (head coach) Kelly Graves. For whatever reason we come out slow, but when it comes down to it we dig down and figure it out."
"(Coaches) were like, you can't foul," Alleyne said. "They always tell me, two points isn't worth that fifth foul. Whoever had the ball in the post, I was making sure to play straight up."
"Drea can impact a game, especially defensively," Graves said. "She's such a little bugger. I don't know how you spell that; I don't know if it's a word. But she can put pressure on people. She disrupts their flow, their offense."
Odds and Ends: Alleyne's first rebound of the game was the 1,000th of her career, making her the third player in UO history to achieve that milestone. … Alleyne reached 18 straight double-doubles for the second time in her career, tying a record she shared with USC legend Cheryl Miller. … Toler made her first career three-pointer. … Janitah Iamaleava made her season debut off the bench.
