EUGENE, Ore.—The No. 40 University of Oregon men's tennis team defeated the Idaho Vandals 4-3 Friday afternoon at the UO Student Tennis Center. The Ducks advance to 11-1 on the season, while the Vandals fall to 11-1.
“Overall, it was a solid win against a very good and very well coached team,” said associate head coach Jonas Piibor. “Now we have to regroup, practice well tomorrow and get ready for a tough Saint Mary's team on Sunday.”
Coaches decided to mix up the doubles lineups a bit for Idaho, as junior Robin Cambier was paired with senior Aaron Clissold in the top spot to take down Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea 8-3, while senior Jeff Mullen teamed with sophomore Daniel Sardu, falling 3-8 to Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos. Junior Alex Rovello and freshman Daan Maasland topped Dmitry Perevoshchikov and Ivan Krijanto 8-2 to seal the doubles point for the Ducks.
Rovello gave UO its first singles point as he defeated Cirstea in the No. 3 spot, while Maasland added another in the No. 4 spot, topping Cesar Torres. Mullen fell to Perevoshchikov in the top spot 6-7(14), 3-6 after an intense first set that saw a 16-14 tiebreaker, but Sardu answered right back by finishing his match 6-3, 6-4 over Bendeck in the No. 5 spot. Robin Cambier lost to Akbar in the No. 2 spot 3-6, 6-7, and Randriamampandry fell 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 on court 6.
The Ducks return to action on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. as they welcome the Saint Mary's Gaels to the UO Student Tennis Center.
