ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 21 University of Oregon softball team (15-3) capped an impressive first day of Citrus Classic play with an 8-1 victory over LIU-Brooklyn (2-14) Friday afternoon.

Thanks to a career-high two homers, senior right fielder Samantha Pappas (3-for-4) also enjoyed season highs in hits (3), RBI (4) and total bases (9) vs. the NCAA tourney returnees.

The next two hitters in the lineup also rapped multiple hits - sophomore center fielder Janie Takeda (2-for-3) and senior second baseman Kaylan Howard (2-for-4, HR, RBI).

The Ducks struck for three runs in the second inning, thanks to Pappas's three-run homer - also her first game-winning RBI of the season.

Freshman DP Stevie Jo Knapp opened the inning by reaching on an infield error on a grounder to second base, and senior left fielder Allie Burger also scored after she drew a 3-2 walk.

In the third inning, Howard led off with her fourth homer of the season. Her shot off a 1-0 pitch raised her career tally to 29 - still eighth-best all-time for the Ducks.

Sophomore third baseman Jamie Rae Sullivan knocked in another run in the third on a bases-loaded, infield ground-out. Junior first baseman Kailee Cuico and sophomore DP Sara Goodrum reached on a pair of infield errors, along with a single by junior catcher Alexa Peterson.

In the fifth inning, Sullivan drilled a two-run homer - her first of the campaign - and drove in Knapp who had opened the inning with a single to left field.

Three batters later, Pappas drilled her second homer of the season - a two-out solo shot - over the center field wall.

In her fourth start of the season, sophomore starter Karissa Hovinga (3-0) struck out five, walked two, allowed six hits, and her one run allowed was earned in her five innings.

Freshman Cheridan Hawkins pitched a scoreless final two innings, struck out two, allowed one hit and no walks.

For Long Island, Cassie Vondrak (2-8) allowed 12 hits, struck out five, walked one, and six of her eight runs allowed were earned in the complete game.

Friday's decision marked the second win vs. the Blackbirds in Duck head coach Mike White's four years at the helm. UO also won 3-1 in their 2010 meeting in Palm Springs.

Earlier Friday, the Ducks opened the tourney with a 10-2, five-inning victory over fellow World Series returnee LSU (14-3).

Looking ahead, Oregon next faces Boston College and Temple on Saturday at 7 and 9:15 a.m. Pacific Time, and No. 14 Michigan and James Madison on Sunday morning at 6 and 8:15 a.m. PT.
