EUGENE, Ore - The University of Oregon women's tennis team defeated Eastern Washington University, 6-1, on Sunday (Mar. 11) at the Student Tennis Center on campus.
"It was good to get this match in after being snowed out in January," remarked head coach Paul Reber. "The girls did a good job making sure they were ready to play after last week's great win over Ohio State. They came out and took charge right from the beginning and made sure to finish strong making it a good weekend for us."
The Ducks (8-2) swept the doubles matches, scoring the crucial first duals point of the day. Oregon has won every dual in which they have won the doubles point. No. 2 doubles tandem Julia Metzger and Trudie du Toit led the way with a dominating effort over Eastern Washington's Kelsey Knight and Chelsea Patton, 8-2.
In singles, du Toit came out in impressive form defeating the Eagles' Chrissy Uriarte, 6-0, 6-0. The lone senior for the Ducks moves to 2-0 from the No. 3 singles position and 8-2 overall for the spring. Elsewhere, junior Patricia Skowronski cruised in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Patton at No. 2 singles while Metzger recovered after a slow first set to blank Moira Hedberg in the second set, winning 7-6, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
The 6-1 dual win for the Ducks makes it the fifth straight victory since dropping to Pac-12 foe Stanford on Feb. 4. Oregon's combined margin of victory in those five matches increases to 30-5. Eastern Washington drops to 2-7 after winning two in a row prior to their run in with Oregon. They will next face the Air Force Academy in a neutral site dual in Issaquah, Wash.
The Ducks will close out their home stand against California on Mar. 17 at 12 p.m. The dual will be Oregon's second Pac-12 dual of the spring.
"We're looking forward to a couple of days off and getting back to practice to be ready to face the Bears on Saturday. It's a great opportunity for us and we need to be ready."
