FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 15 University of Oregon softball team (17-3) topped Purdue (11-4) for the second time in a week with its 9-1 decision in its second of two games Saturday in the Bayer Cropscience Classic.
The Ducks staked their season-best-tying eighth straight win of 2012, and fifth regulation-shortened win of the season via the eight-run rule, thanks to three runs in the first, and two each in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
UO junior Jessica Moore (11-3) notched her 11th complete game of the year, struck out three, walked three, allowed seven hits, and her one run allowed was unearned.
With Saturday's stats, the All-Pac-12 pitcher from Sutter, Calif., native continued her move up various Duck all-time career charts in wins (fifth, 51) and complete games (eighth-tie, 42). Similarly, her second-best strikeouts total (540) is only 44 away from the school record.
At the plate, UO's 13 hits for the second straight game Saturday tied its season high (and stood as its most in a five-inning contest).
Four Ducks had multiple hits - freshman Janie Takeda (3-for-4, 1 RBI), senior Kelsey Chambers (2-for-3), junior Kaylan Howard (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and sophomore Courtney Ceo (2-for-4).
Four others had single hits and one RBI a piece - senior Christie Nieto, junior Samantha Pappas, and sophomores Kailee Cuico and Alexa Peterson.
In the first inning, UO scored all three runs with two outs, thanks to Howard's two-run triple and Pappas's RBI single up the middle. Howard was credited with her second game-winning RBI of the day, and team-leading sixth of the year (compared with one last year).
Cuico led off the third inning by reaching on an error by the shortstop, and after a ground-out and error by the catcher, she scored on a Peterson single. Pappas, who had walked in between, scored on the next at-bat on a single by Nieto.
Takeda and Chambers led off the fourth with infield singles, and the former scored on an error by the catcher. Howard lined another extra-base hit, this time a one-out double, to score Chambers.
In the fifth, Nieto walked on four pitches to lead off the inning, and after a sacrifice bunt and single by Ceo, she scored on a Takeda infield single. Two batters later, Cuico's single up the middle knocked in Ceo to reach the eight-run, game-ending differential.
Purdue starter Alex Whittemore (2-1) pitched the first 2.1 innings, struck out two, walked two, allowed seven hits, and four of her five runs allowed were earned. Lexy Moore pitched the final 2.1 innings, struck out three, walked one, gave up six hits, and three of her four runs allowed were earned.
At the plate, six Boilermaker batters hit safely, and Lindsey Rains (2-for-3) was the lone opposing player with multiple hits.
The two teams met last week in Orlando with UO triumphing, 9-3, and Karissa Hovinga and Moore both pitching. Three Ducks - Ceo, Takeda and Pappas - hit safely twice, and Cuico hit a two-run homer late in the game.
Similarly score-wise Saturday morning, UO beat Connecticut (1-7) by a 9-3 count, and a link to the game recap is available here.
Looking ahead, UO concludes action in the tourney Sunday morning with an 11:15 am tilt vs. San Diego State.
