FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 15 University of Oregon softball team (16-3) won its seventh straight game of the season with its 9-3 victory over Connecticut (1-7) Saturday to open the second day of the Bayer Cropscience Classic.

In the two teams' first meeting since 1989, Oregon struck for three runs in the first, two more in the third, another run in the fourth, and three more in the sixth to raise its all-time record in the series to 3-1.

Duck freshman Karissa Hovinga (6-0) pitched the first four innings, struck out three, walked none, allowed six hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.

After UConn's opening hitter reached via a single to open the fifth, junior Jessica Moore came in, and after allowing a single, got three straight strikeouts.

En route to her first save of the year, the returning All-Pac-12 pick added three more "K's" in the final two innings to end with six in her three innings, to go along with no walks, one hit and no runs.

In the first inning, sophomore Courtney Ceo and freshman Janie Takeda led off with singles, and sophomore Kailee Cuico added an infield single up the middle to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Kaylan Howard knocked in the first run on a bloop single to right field for her fifth game-winning RBI of the year, and after the second baseman bobbled the ball, a second run scored. The next batter, sophomore Samantha Pappas, hit an infield ground-out for the inning's final run.

In the third inning, Cuico added an RBI double and freshman Jamie Rae Sullivan lined an RBI single to account for UO's two runs.

Oregon collected four more hits in the fourth, but came away with only one run on a single by senior Lindsey Chambers.

In the sixth, a single by Ceo and Takeda were followed by a walk by Kelsey Chambers that set up a sacrifice fly by Cuico. Takeda scored on a suicide bunt by Lindsey Chambers, and Kelsey Chambers later scored from third base on a successful pick-off attempt of her twin between first and second base.

UConn scored all three of its runs in a three at-bat stretch in the third inning. Kim Silva homered to center field on a 1-2 pitch; lead-off hitter Jen ward followed with a triple to right center field; and Emily O'Donnell crushed a two-run homer to left field. Hovinga bounced back with a pair of infield ground-outs to end the inning.

Husky starter Kiki Saveriano (1-4) worked the first six innings, struck out two, walked three, allowed 13 hits, and eight of her nine runs allowed were earned. Katelyn Callahan pitched the final inning, struck out one, walked none and gave up no hits or runs.

Looking ahead, UO remains at Bulldog Diamond to play Purdue (11-3) at 11:15 a.m. The two teams played last weekend in Orlando, and UO staked an 8-1 victory.

Afterwards, Oregon concludes action in the tourney Sunday morning with an 11:15 am tilt vs. San Diego State.
