01/21/12 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Oregon and senior Jasmin Holliday left California on a high note, leading from start to finish in an 83-62victory over UCLA on Saturday afternoon at the John Wooden Center.
In her last game ever at UCLA (8-10, 3-4) Holliday, a native of Chino Hills, Calif., recorded her seventh career double leading Oregon (11-9, 3-5) with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
The Ducks led by as many as 31 early in the second half, as Oregon shot 42.3 percent (30-of-71) from the floor, and outrebounded UCLA, 53-47, scoring 27 second-chance points on 23 offensive rebounds.
Oregon had four players reach double figures, as freshman Liz Brenner recorded the first double-double of her career with 15 points and a career-high tying 11 rebounds.
Sophomore Danielle Love added a career-high tying 16 points and set a new career best with four three-pointers, while Ariel Thomas poured in 11 points.
Senior Nia Jackson also dished a game and season-high seven assists in the win.
For the Ducks, it was their first victory on the road this season, and the 21-point win was also Oregon's largest margin of victory this year.
For head coach Paul Westhead, it was his first win against UCLA as the Oregon women's basketball coach, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Bruins.
UCLA was led by Holliday's high school teammate Rebekah Gardner's 22 points and 15 rebounds. Thea Lemberger added 18 points, knocking down four three-pointers, while Corinne Costa added 10 points for the Bruins.
Oregon led 77-53 with 3:58 to play, but UCLA incorporated full-court pressure and used a 9-0 run to close within 77-62 with 1:58 left on the clock. The Bruins outscored Oregon 39-31 in the second half.
UCLA shot 30.4 percent (24-of-79) from the floor and the Ducks forced the Bruins into 15 turnovers.
Oregon went into the locker room with a commanding 29-point lead, 52-23, as the Ducks dashed their way to their largest overall lead of the year.
The Ducks shot 47.6 percent (20-of-42) from the floor in the first half, and held an advantage in each category as UO outscored UCLA 22-10 in the paint, scored 15 points off the Bruins' nine first-half turnovers and added 20 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds.
Holliday was a rebound short of a first-half double-double with 15 points and nine boards, while Brenner added 11 points and eight boards – including two three point plays. Jackson also added five first-half assists and three steals.
With 13:59 to play in the first, Oregon held a slim 11-10 advantage after a Gardner trey, but the Oregon defense held UCLA scoreless and went on an 11-0 run until a Costa lay-up at the 9:20 mark finally broke the Bruins' drought as the Ducks led 22-12.
Oregon will play its third consecutive road game on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Oregon State. The first round of the Civil War will be televised at 4 p.m. from Gill Coliseum on ROOT Sports.
