BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 17 University of Oregon softball team (30-11, 2-7) ended it scoreless streak against No. 13 California (27-8, 5-4) Sunday afternoon thanks to two early runs, but ultimately succumbed by a 5-2 score at Levine-Fricke Field.
For the third straight game, Oregon's most productive inning was the first as freshman Courtney Ceo
and sophomore Kaylan Howard
led off with singles. After a sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position, freshman Kailee Cuico
lined a two-run single down the right field line to put UO up, 2-0.
Cal answered in the bottom half of the stanza. After a pair of one-out singles and hit by pitch loaded the bases, Frani Ziegenhirt delivered a three-run double down the right field line.
Afterward, UO put runners on first base in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings via a walk and three singles, respectively, but none advanced any farther.
Cal added a single run in the fifth after a wild pitch scored a runner from third base, and again in the sixth on Ziegenhirt's solo homer.
In her first appearance of the series, Cal starter and freshman Arianna Erceg (3-3) gave up five hits and one walk, struck out one, and both of her runs allowed were earned. Senior Jolene Henderson pitched the final three innings, allowed one hit and no runs, and logged three strikeouts and no walks.
Duck starter and sophomore Jessica Moore
(15-6) worked the first five innings, yielded seven hits and no walks, struck out five, and four of her five runs allowed were earned.
After Ziegenhirt's homer, junior Mikayla Endicott
pitched to the next two batters and hit one and walked the other. Junior Samantha Skillingstad
followed and got the final three outs, struck out one, walked none and allowed no hits or runs.
At the plate for UO, Cuico banged out two hits and led UO in the category for the second straight game. Sophomore Samantha Pappas
and senior Kaitlin Vitek
also hit safely once, and senior Cortney Kivett
reached via a walk.
