BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 13 California softball team ended a three-game losing streak to the No. 17 University of Oregon with Friday's 5-0 decision at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bears (26-8, 3-4) scored two runs in the first inning, then added three more runs in the fourth inning off sophomore starter Jessica Moore
(15-5).
For UO (30-9, 2-5), freshman and lead-off hitter Courtney Ceo
(2-for-4) led the squad in hits and posted her team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the campaign.
The team's next two hitters in the lineup – freshman Alexa Peterson
and sophomore Samantha Pappas
– added 1-for-3 efforts, and Peterson also reached via a walk.
Cal starter and senior Jolene Henderson (23-5) added to her Pac-10 leading victory total, struck out seven, walked two, and scattered four hits in her ninth shutout of the season.
On the mound for UO, Moore struck out two, walked two, gave up six hits, and three of her five runs allowed were earned.
After Moore gave up three straight hits to open the fourth inning, senior Brittany Rumfelt
worked the next two innings, struck out two, walked four, and yielded four hits.
Rumfelt walked two batters to start the sixth inning. and was relieved by junior Samantha Skillingstad
. The Spokane, Wash., native pitched the final inning, struck out one, walked one, and didn't allow a hit.
Cal leadoff hitter Jamia Reid went 3-for-3 and stole her 18th base of the season - as did Britt Vonk in the latter category. Five other Bear hitters hit safely, including Lindsey Ziegenhirt who homered to open the fourth inning.
UO's best chance to score came in the first inning when Ceo and Peterson reached via infield singles with no outs, then advanced to second and third on a second-out infield error. However, a strikeout ended the inning.
The Ducks also left runners stranded on second base in the sixth and seventh innings against Henderson who also entered the weekend with league-leading marks in ERA (0.87), strikeouts (173) and opposing batting average (.167).
Friday's decision halted the Ducks' run in the series after it staked its first multi-game season series sweep last year in Eugene (7-6 (9), 1-0, 8-6 (9)) in the rivalry dating back to 1979.
Looking ahead, the teams meet again for single games Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
