No. 15 Ducks Slam Rebels in Five Innings, 11-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - In Friday's Mustang Classic opener, grand slams by freshman Kailee Cuico and sophomore Samantha Pappas propelled the No. 15 University of Oregon softball team (25-4) past UNLV (15-11) by an 11-3 score in five innings.
Cuico drilled her first career grand slam in the first inning, while Pappas launched her second grand slam as a collegian in the sixth inning after first turning the trick vs. Idaho State last year.
Senior Monique Fuiava drove in the game's first run with an RBI single in the first inning - her fifth-straight game-winning RBI and sixth the last eight games.
Two batters later, Cuico connected on the aforementioned round-tripper on the ninth pitch of the at-bat - also the team's third grand slam in as many games after Fuiava drilled one at Portland State Wednesday.
Fuiava extended her six-game hitting streak with her 3-for-4 day and is hitting .625 in the stretch (10-for-16, 4 doubles, 2 HR, 15 RBI).
Pappas and freshman Courtney Ceo also staked two hits, and four others hit safely once (Cuico, Allie Burger , Christie Nieto and Alexa Peterson ).
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore (13-2) struck out three, walked three, allowed three hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
Junior Samantha Skillingstad pitched the final inning, struck out two, walked two, and allowed one hit - a homer to Stefany Valentino.
The Rebels claimed their first run on a first-inning homer by lead-off hitter Ashli Holland, then added another run in the fourth on an infield ground-out that followed a walk and single.
UNLV starter Traci Odegard (1-1) struck out seven, walked three, allowed 11 hits, and nine of her runs allowed were earned, while reliever Jessica O'Connor retired the last out after Pappas' slam.
Looking ahead, UO plays host Cal Poly (3-19) immediately after Friday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.
