Duck Blast Vikings 8-3 in Doubleheader Game 1

PORTLAND, Ore. - The No. 15 University of Oregon softball team (23-4) again relied on the long ball to top Portland State (12-11) by an 8-3 score in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
In the fourth inning, senior Monique Fuiava crushed a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for her second career grand slam. The two-out shot was her 23rd round-tripper all-time career-wise - ninth-most all-time for UO - and also her team-high fourth game-winning RBI of the season (and third straight).
Two innings later, freshman Courtney Ceo and sophomore Samantha Pappas drilled their fourth and sixth homers of the campaign, respectively.
On the mound, Duck senior Brittany Rumfelt (2-0) struck out seven, allowed only three hits and walked one in her first complete game of 2011.
PSU capitalized on one of her few mistakes when Karmen Holladay launched a two-run homer to left field in the second inning, and scored Sadie Lopez who had singled the prior at-bat with two outs.
UO's first run came in the fourth inning, when Pappas led off with a bunt single, stole second for her eighth steal of the season, then came around on a single by the next batter, Fuiava, for her team-season high fifth RBI.
Oregon scored its other run in the sixth after junior Christie Nieto doubled with two outs. Pinch-runner and senior Cortney Kivett scored when Rumfelt followed with a single to right field.
At game's end, eight Ducks combined for 14 hits - one off the team's season high - thanks to Ceo (3-for-3), Pappas (2-for-4), Fuiava (2-for-4), Kelsey Chambers (2-for-4), Rumfelt (2-for-3), Allie Burger (1-for-3), Christie Nieto (1-for-3) and Kailee Cuico (1-for-2).
PSU starter Nichole Latham (7-6) also pitched a complete game, struck out four, walked one, allowed 14 hits, and all eight of her runs allowed were earned.
At the plate for PSU, Jenna Krough (1-for-3) was the other Viking to hit safely besides Lopez and Holladay.
Looking ahead, UO plays the second game of the day immediately after at Erv Lind Stadium.
