EUGENE - The No. 13 University of Oregon softball team (13-2) tapped a sixth-inning solo home run by Kelsey Chambers to win its second game Sunday in day two of the Libby Matson Tournament.
On the mound, junior Samantha Skillingstad held the Broncos at bay in her second shutout of the season. The Spokane, Wash., native struck out 11 - one off her career high - walked four, and allowed only three hits.
The Ducks appeared ready to score early when a Christie Nieto single and Kelsey Chambers walk opened the second inning. However, a failed bunt resulted in the first out, and the next hitter grounded into a double play.
In the third, UO opened the inning with a pair of bunt singles, and an error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, an infield grounder led to a double play at the plate and first base, followed by a foul-out to end the threat.
Oregon's hopes again looked optimistic in the third inning after a Nieto walk and single by Kaitlin Vitek with one out. However, a fielder's choice that force-out at home and infield ground-out ended yet another threat.
Pappas - UO's only hitter wth multiple hits - rapped her second hit to open the fifth inning, took second base on a sacrifice bunt, and third on a wild pitch, but was stranded after a strikeout and fly-out.
At game's end, the Ducks had left eight runners on base for the game, while Santa Clara stranded seven.
Bronco starter Jessica Turner (0-3) struck out one, walked three, scattered seven hits, and her run allowed was earned.
Sunday proved the second chapter in a tale of two games for the freshman pitcher from Oklahoma. A day earlier she had given up eight runs - all earned - and got only one Pacific batter out among the eight she faced in her 40-pitch, 1/3 of an inning as the starter in a 11-1, five-inning loss.
At the plate for Santa Clara Sunday, three players scratched out hits - Stephanie Fisher, Kelly Scribner and Kristin Welsh. Two of those were doubles in the first and fourth innings, but Skillingstad retired the batters immediately after to end each inning.
Earlier Sunday, the Ducks also shut out San Jose State (8-6) for the second straight day behind the pitching of sophomore Jessica Moore.
In her 6-0 win, the Sutter, Calif., native (6-1) pitched the first six innings, struck out seven, walked four and allowed three hits. Skillingstad worked the final inning, struck out two and allowed no hits.
Looking ahead, UO returns for its final game of the tourney against host Pacific on Monday at 10 a.m.
