LAST YEAR'S ROAD TRIP THE TO WASHINGTON SCHOOLS
Last season, UO took a four-game winning streak into the road weekend at the Washington schools before posting a 91-89 double-overtime victory over WSU and a 90-79 win at then 17th-ranked UW.
It marked the first time since the 1999-00 season that UO swept road games over Washington and Washington State. The win over UW was the first win over a ranked opponent since Jan. 13, 2008, UO's 71-66 home win over then 23rd-ranked Stanford. It was also UO's first road win over UW since Feb. 17, 2001, an 85-73 victory where Luke Jackson recorded a triple-double.
Junior guard Malcolm Armstead averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 assists and 1.5 steals in the those road wins. He is one of five players on the 2010-11 roster that played in those games last year. Junior guard Teondre Williams (6.0 ppg) and sophomore forward E.J. Singler (5.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) are other notables.
CATRON AVERAGING CAREER BESTS
Senior forward Joevan Catron has now played in 110 career games averaging career-bests for points (16.4 ppg) and field goal shooting percentage (.538, 78-of-145). He leads the team in scoring, shooting percentage, field goals attempted and field goals made, while ranking second in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and is third in minutes played (26.7 mpg).
Catron, who was awarded a medical hardship in the offseason, has scored in double-figures in 12 of the 14 games in 2010-11. Four of his five career 20-point games occurred this season. He's led UO in scoring 12 times in his career, nine of those have come in 2010-11.
Catron has scored 61.3 percent of his points after halftime, with 141 of his 230 total points coming during the final 20 minutes (and OT). In an overtime win over North Dakota State, he tallied 16 of his career-best 27 points in the second half. Catron also scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half of a home loss to San Jose State.
OREGON'S PAC-10 STATISTICAL RANKINGS
UO compares favorably with their Pac-10 foes in several statistical categories, ranking second in free throw shooting (.723, 209-of-289) and steals (8.7 spg, 122), third in turnover margin (+4.1, 178-235) and offensive rebounds (12.4, 174), and fourth in defensive rebound percentage (.708, 320-132).
Senior forward Joevan Catron ranks fourth in scoring (16.4 ppg, 230) and third in offensive rebounds (3.1 orpg, 43). Sophomore forward E.J. Singler is second in free throw shooting percentage (.854, 41-of-48) and seventh in blocks (1.2 bpg, 17). Junior guard Malcolm Armstead is second in steals (2.2 spg, 31) and eighth in assists (3.7 apg, 52). Junior guard Teondre Williams is second in 3-point field goal percentage (.480, 12-of-25).
SINGLER STEPS INTO KEY ROLE
Sophomore forward E.J. Singler leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg, 90) and blocks (1.2 bpg, 17), while ranking second on the team in scoring (12.1 ppg, 170), field goal percentage (.491, 56-of-114) and 3-point field goal percentage (.378, 17-of-45).
Singler has reached double figures in scoring 11 times in 14 games. The Medford, Ore., product had opened the season by scoring in double figures in each of the first seven games.
In the near upset of No. 9 Missouri, Singler tallied a career-best 19 points to go with nine rebounds. On Dec. 11 he posted an 18-point, 17-rebound (career high) effort in the blowout win over Willamette. That single-game rebound total ties Singler for the top performance amongst Pac-10 players this season (with Arizona State's Kyle Cain, 17 vs. Houston Baptist, 11-25-10).
LAST WEEK'S GAMES
Oregon dropped games to Arizona and Arizona State last week, falling 76-57 to the Wildcats before a 60-55 loss to the Sun Devils. They were the final two men's basketball games played at McArthur Court.
ASU made 44.9 percent of its shots and held UO to 32.1 percent shooting from the floor. The Ducks out-rebounded the Sun Devils, 36-33. Sophomore forward E.J. Singler matched a career-high with 19 points to go with a team-best nine rebounds.
Arizona shot 55.6 percent and limited the Ducks to just 34.8 percent shooting (5.9 percent of 3-pointers). UO was out-rebounded 40-27. Junior forward Jeremy Jacob scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Ducks offensively.
