Oregon - UCLA postgame quotes
01/15/11 | Men's Basketball
Oregon 59, UCLA 67
January 15, 2011 - Matthew Knight Arena
-----------------------------------------------------
Head Coach Dana Altman
On losing the game:
I am disappointed. We had our opportunity we didn't seize it. We got beat on 2nd chance points in the second half and it was the difference in the game. Some of it was carelessness, and we didn't rebound like we needed to. We had some careless turnovers, and we had some bad possessions.
On missing Second chance points:
We got the ball to the rim and didn't finish. We have to make sure we take the easy baskets. We're not going to wake up tomorrow a great scoring team and grow five inches. We have to make sure we take the easy shots.
On the lack of defense in the second half:
Our defense didn't have the same bite to it as it did in the first half. The energy level was not the same.
On the size of the team in comparison to UCLA:
We have to play well on all cylinders. Our margin of error is not very big, just like our team. We left a lot of the rebounding up to JJ (Jeremy Jacob), E.J. (Singler), and Tyrone (Nared) and they're not that big either.
On Joevan Catron's status:
A strained calf is tricky and we have to be careful. We will make a decision late this week about whether or not he will play against Oregon State, it's a 50/50 chance.
His thoughts on Oregon State:
Their players are athletic and deep. The one thing that impresses me is that they're loose and they play hard.
On negative comments about the new court:
I care more about the team. If the people who have put their heart and soul in to this building and program love the court, then I love the court. My job is to coach the team.
-----------------------------------------------------
E.J. Singler, No. 25
On UCLA's second chance points:
We didn't box out. Those were key points to their win. We just didn't play as hard in the second half and that's why we lost.
On UCLA coming back in second half:
Howland is a good coach and he changed some things up in the 2nd half. At the end, it was us just not playing hard, which was a big reason for our loss.
On shot selection:
We need to keep on shooting where we know we can make it and have confidence in those shots.
On Oregon offense:
We need to move the ball and not be stagnant. We need to make the defense move. We need to get in and get out.
Three-pointers by UCLA in second half:
The 3's are back breakers. When they hit 3's and we're not hitting any of our shots, it's tough.
On the Civil War:
I am really excited. Civil War games are really fun. The Beavers are playing well and we have to go in with a lot of effort to win.
-----------------------------------------------------
Tyrone Nared, No. 31
On scoring off rebounds:
We didn't work as a team to tip in those rebounds.
On changing up offense because of Catron's injury:
We were playing a lot more zoning because Joevan was injured.
-----------------------------------------------------
Head Coach UCLA Ben Howland On technical of Joshua Smith: "He was just saying, 'Let's Go!' He did not say any cuss
words, he was just excited." "I want to come back in my next life as Josh Smith. I am
excited to be coaching him. He is just a freshman." On Lazeric Jones and Jerime Anderson: "Having them play together definitely helps us offensively." On Jerime Anderson: "This year he is going in with a lot of effort. He really
put in time last spring and broke down his shot. Physically he is in the best shape he has
ever been in." On Matthew Knight Arena: "It is a beautiful arena. The only trouble was finding the
score; you had to look at the bottom of the scoreboard. It is hard to see with
so many numbers." "It is an awesome place." On officials: "The officials have a hard job every game. We cannot let
that affect us. They are human and they miss things." UCLA player Reeves Nelson, No. 22 On win: "I am proud of our team.
We went out with everything." On first two wins of the Pac-10 season: "Our first road trip in the Pac-10 we got a sweep. With
everything against us, I am proud of our team." On Matthew Knight Arena: "This is the nicest arena we have played in all year and
will play in all year. It is really
nice. That is all you can say." On Matthew Knight Arena floor: "It did not affect us as much as I thought it would." UCLA player Jerime Anderson, No. 5 On win: "We had the first win as the opposing team in arena tonight.
It was a tough test, but we came together on this trip and it looked good for
us."
