Bruins Rally Past Ducks, 67-59
01/15/11 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE – The
University of Oregon men's basketball team gave UCLA an early scare, but
the Bruins caught fire in the second half to send the Ducks to a 67-59
loss at Matthew Knight Arena on Saturday.
The loss drops UO to 8-10 and 1-5 in Pac-10 play. UCLA improves to 11-6, 3-2 in the Pac-10.
Oregon scored the first four points of the afternoon behind baskets by E.J. Singler and Malcolm Armstead. After falling behind 9-4 in the early going, UCLA scored six unanswered points to grab a 10-9 lead with 11:51 to go in the first half.
Trailing for the first time, the Ducks erupted for a 16-3 run to grab their largest lead of the day at 25-13 with 5:54 remaining in the opening stanza, bringing the crowd of 11,089 to life. The Bruins burned their third timeout with 5:52 remaining and stemmed the tide, closing the half on an 11-2 spurt to cut the Ducks' lead to 27-24 at the break.
UCLA's hot stretch continued into the second half as the run extended to 21-7 to give the Bruins a 36-32 lead with 14:14 to play.
Undeterred, Oregon regained the lead with an 8-2 run of its own. Tyrone Nared scored the last four points of the outburst to give the Ducks a 40-38 lead midway through the final frame.
The Bruins managed to tie it up on a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession and reeled off eight-straight points to take the lead. A three-pointer by Johnathan Loyd and an Armstead basket brought UO back within one, but a Jerime Anderson triple gave UCLA a two possession lead once again at 49-45.
An Armstead three-pointer brought the Ducks back within two at 57-55 with under four minutes to play, but that was as close as Oregon got the rest of the way as the Bruins allowed only one field goal and two free throws the rest of the way.
UCLA shot 50 percent from the floor and held Oregon to only 37.7 percent shooting. The Bruins made 9-of-24 three pointers while the Ducks made 6-of-17 trifectas. UCLA also outrebounded UO, 37-30. The Ducks' defense forced 18 turnovers while only committing 11 turnovers themselves.
Singler led UO with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Jeremy Jacob's 12 points. Nared pulled down a team-best eight rebounds and Loyd dished out five assists to lead the Ducks.
Oregon is back in action on Jan. 22 when it squares off with rival Oregon State in Corvallis.
OREGON – UCLA POSTGAME NOTES
- After being held scoreless in the last two outings, Jeremy Jacob scored 12 points (eight of which came in 10 first half minutes). It was the first time Jacob has reached 10+ points since his 17-point effort against Arizona on Dec. 30.
- Oregon, which went 7-of-8 on free throws in the game, did not shoot a free throw in the first half. It was the second time this season UO was held without an attempt from the charity stripe over the first 20 minutes of play (other coming Dec. 5 vs. Portland State). The two teams combined to shoot just four free throws (UCLA went 1-4) in the first stanza.
- Malcolm Armstead established a new season-best with five rebounds.
- E.J. Singler (15 points) tallied a team-high for points for the fourth time this season.
- Tyrone Nared set a new career-high with eight rebounds (four of the offensive variety).
- Garrett Sim matched a season-best with three steals (previously set vs. Portland State on Dec. 5).
