MALARKY TO BE HONORED AT SATURDAY'S GAME
The University of Oregon is proud to recognize one of its heroes of World War II, Tech Sergeant Donald G. Malarky.
Malarky grew up in Astoria, Ore., the son of UO football player Leo “Tick” Malarky. Don was in his first semester at UO when the attack on Pearl Habor happened and the United States entered World War II.
He became a member of “Easy” Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. On D-Day, he parachuted into France with his unit and earned the Bronze Star for his heroism.
The memories of Malarky and the other surviving members of Easy Company became the basis of Stephen Ambrose's book, Band of Brothers, later made into an HBO mini-series of the same name. Malarky's memories of the Niland Brothers became the basis for the screenplay of Saving Private Ryan.
Following World War II, Malarky returned to UO, earning a bachelor's degree in business. He went on to be a successful businessman and Clatsop County Commissioner.
CATRON AVERAGING CAREER BESTS
Senior forward Joevan Catron has now played in 108 career games averaging career-bests for points (17.5 ppg), rebounds (6.6 rpg) and field goal shooting percentage (.538, 71-of-132). He leads the team in scoring, rebounding, shooting percentage, field goals attempted and field goals made, and is second in minutes played (27.6 mpg).
Catron, who was awarded a medical hardship in the offseason, has scored in double-figures in 11 of the 12 games in 2010-11. Four of his five career 20-point games occurred this season. He's led UO in scoring 12 times in his career, nine of those have come in 2010-11.
Catron has scored 63.3 percent of his points after halftime, with 133 of his 210 total points coming during the final 20 minutes (and OT). In an overtime win over North Dakota State, he tallied 16 of his career-best 27 points in the second half. Catron also scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half of a home loss to San Jose State.
UO'S PAC-10 STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Oregon compares favorably to their Pac-10 counterparts in several statistical categories. UO is second in free throw shooting (.728, 182-of-250), third in steals (8.8 spg, 106), and fourth in scoring offense (74.2 ppg, 890), turnover margin (+3.9, 154-201) and offensive rebounding (12.4 orpg, 149).
Senior forward Joevan Catron ranks second in offensive rebounds (3.2 orpg, 38), third in scoring (17.5 ppg, 210) and 10th in total rebounding (6.6 rpg, 79). Sophomore forward E.J. Singler is third in free throw shooting percentage (.825, 33-of-40), sixth in 3-point shooting percentage (.444, 16-of-36) and eighth in blocks (1.1 bpg, 13). Junior guard Malcolm Armstead is fourth in steals (2.0 spg, 24) and sixth in assists (4.0 apg, 48).
SINGLER STEPS INTO KEY ROLE
Sophomore forward E.J. Singler leads the team in blocks (1.1 bpg, 13) and 3-point field goal percentage (.444, 16-of-36). He also ranks second on the team in scoring (12.3 ppg, 147), field goal percentage (.533, 49-of-92) and total rebounding (6.4 rpg, 77).
Singler has reached double figures in scoring 10 times in 12 games. The Medford, Ore., product had opened the season by scoring in double figures in each of the first seven games.
In the near upset of No. 9 Missouri, Singler tallied a career-best 19 points to go with nine rebounds. Last week he posted an 18-point, 17-rebound (career high) effort in the blowout win over Willamette. That single-game rebound total ties Singler for the top performance amongst Pac-10 players this season (with Arizona State's Kyle Cain, 17 vs. Houston Baptist, 11-25-10).
LAST TIME OUT: IDAHO 69, OREGON 65
The Ducks struggled shooting from the floor in a 69-65 loss to Idaho at Mac Court on Dec. 21. The contest featured 11 ties and six lead changes while neither team led by more than seven points.
