TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Oregon softball team (10-17, 0-2) dropped its first game of the weekend in the desert, 8-0, to defending national champion and No. 6 Arizona State Friday night at ASU's Farrington Field.
The Sun Devils (29-5, 1-0) won the game in six innings behind freshman pitcher Hayley Bach (16-1) who no-hit the Ducks, while two UO hitters, Monique Fuiava and Blair Williamson, walked to prevent the potential perfect game.
Two other Duck hitters, senior Sari-Jane Jenkins and sophomore Cortney Kivett, almost reached via hits early in the game on infield choppers.
ASU scored its first run in the second inning after Kaylyn Castillo doubled in a runner from second base. In the third, former national player of the year Kaitlin Cochran hit her 13th homer of the season with a runner on over the right center field wall.
Freshman Samantha Skillingstad (7-7) pitched the first three innings, and struck out one, walked four and all four of her runs allowed were earned.
Senior Melissa Rice came in and relieved in the top of the fourth inning with two runners on and no outs, and got out of the inning with two strikeouts and a line-out to shortstop and allowed only one run on an error by the second baseman.
An inning later in the fifth, a walk and three straight singles prompted another pitching change as freshman Mikayla Endicott got three of the next four batters out via a groundout, fly to center field and a liner to shortstop.
Endicott ultimately pitched the last 1 1/3 innings, walked one, and her run allowed was earned which ended the game in the sixth ? a double that the hitter ultimately scored on after an errant throw to third base. Rice was credited with the other three runs ? all of which were earned, struck out two and walked one.
For ASU, only four players hit safely - Cochran (2-for-2, 3 runs, 2 RBI, 2 walks), Katelyn Boyd (2-for-3, 2 runs), Krista Donnenwirth (1-for-3, 1 run) and Kaylyn Castillo (3-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBI).
Looking ahead, the Ducks play at No. 11 Arizona Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m.
