CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. ? The University of Oregon softball team (5-8) lost its lone game Friday to Texas, 9-0, in second-day action in the Cathedral City Classic.
Texas (8-3) scored three runs in the first inning and six more in the second off the UO pitching staff who used all four pitchers in the opening two innings.
Freshman right-hander Mikayla Endicott finished the game and allowed no runs, struck out one, walked one, and gave up one hit in her 2.1 innings of work.
The Roseburg, Ore., native came in with two runners on in the second inning, and snagged a liner up the middle to end the inning. Fellow frosh Samantha Skillingstad (5-3) started the game and allowed three runs ? all unearned ? and two hits in her inning of work.
UT's runs in the first came on a three-run homer with two outs by Loryn Johnson.
Senior Melissa Rice started the second inning on the mound, and allowed three straight hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned and she failed to get an out. Sophomore Brittany Rumfelt got the first two outs of the inning, and was credited with allowing UT's final three runs on four hits and a walk.
At bat for UO, sophomore designated player Monique Fuiava reached via a walk to open the second inning and a bunt single with two outs in the fourth inning. Junior first baseman Carlyn Re also singled to open the third inning, and UO's other base runner was senior Sari-Jane Jenkins who walked with one out in the fourth inning.
UT starter Brittany Barnhill pitched the five-inning complete game, struck out two, and walked two. Eight Longhorn hitters hit safely, although only two had multi-hits - returning All-Big 12 First Team pick Loryn Johnson (2-for-2, 4 RBI, 1 run) and Brittany Chalk (2-for-2, 1 run).
Looking ahead to Saturday's third-day action, UO faces Georgia Tech and Nebraska at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ? another pair of teams spotted in this week's polls receiving votes, while the Yellow Jackets were also NCAA qualifiers last year.
