WYOMING PREVIEW
Wyoming (8-1) hosts two games at home this week taking on Weber State on Friday night and Oregon on Sunday. The Cowgirls' only blemish this season is 63-50 loss at Washington State on Dec. 5.
Hillary Carlson averages 13.9 points per game for Wyoming, while Aubrey Vandiver is averaging 12.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
Oregon edged Wyoming, 51-45, last season at Mac Court on Nov. 29, 2008, and the Ducks hold a 2-1 advantage in the series. The last time UO went to Laramie, the Cowgirls squeaked out a 64-62 victory in the third round of the WNIT Tournament. Taylor Lilley and Micaela Cocks both played in that game for the Ducks, while Vandiver is the only player from Wyoming that appeared in the postseason contest on March 22, 2007.
UTAH PREVIEW
Utah is off to a 5-4 start this season, and is set to take on South Dakota State on Saturday before the Ducks roll into Salt Lake City.
The Ducks and Utes have played only one common opponent this season, Santa Clara, and Utah defeated the Broncos 59-54 on the road.
Kalee Whipple and Taryn Wicijowski are averaging 14.8 points and 14.6 points per game to lead the Utes, respectively.
Oregon holds a 9-4 series advantage over the Utes, but Utah took last season's meeting, 63-49, at Mac Court on Dec. 28, 2009. The last time the Ducks went to Salt Lake City, the Utes were also victorious, 63-48, on Dec. 16, 2000.
RECEIVING VOTES
Off to an 8-2 start under first-year coach Paul Westhead, the Ducks earned nine points in this weeks Associated Press Top-25 poll. It marks the first time Oregon has received votes in the poll since Dec. 11, 2006.
PRESEASON POLL
Oregon was selected to finish eighth in the both the Pac-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll and the Pac-10 Preseason Media Poll.
The results are not a surprise citing UO's finish to the 2008-09 season which included dropping its final six games of the season and losing 10 of the final 11 tilts of the year.
UO CURRENT STATUS
• Oregon (8-2) is second in the nation and first in the Pac-10 averaging 89.6 points per game. The only team in the country outscoring the Ducks is Oral Roberts, averaging 91.6 points per game.
The Ducks' 117-69 victory over Cal State Fullerton is also the highest scoring output (117) from a team this season.
Other top-10 national marks for Oregon include:
Category Rank Number
Three-Point FG Per Game No. 6 9.4
Assists Per Game No. T-7 19.0
Scoring Margin No. 8 24.7 ppg
Assist-to-Turnover Ratio No. 9 1.21
Three-Point FG Defense No. 9 22.3 %
• Oregon is now 8-2 and off to its best start since the 2005-06 season, before current four-year seniors Micaela Cocks and Taylor Lilley arrived on campus.
• The Ducks are one-win shy of tying their win total, nine, from last season.
• Oregon took last week off to focus on finals. Oregon's game at Georgia Tech on Wednesday was the Ducks' first game in 10 days since a 102-70 victory over Long Beach State on Dec. 6. Prior to the 10-day layoff from games, Oregon endured a stretch of eight games in 15 days.
• Amanda Johnson's 11.1 rebounds per game currently rank 14th in the nation, and her five double-doubles on the year tie for fifth in the country.
• Senior guard Taylor Lilley's 3.7 three-pointers per game currently tie for seventh in the nation.
LILLEY ON THE BRINK
• After knocking down seven three-pointers in last Sunday's win over Long Beach State, and one more at No. 25 Georgia Tech, senior Taylor Lilley is coming dangerously close to breaking Oregon's all-time three-point field goal record. With 180 to her credit, Lilley needs to make just 10 more to top Missy Croshaw's (1990-94) current record of 189. Currently resting at fourth all-time, Lilley needs three more treys to pass Jamie Craighead (182, 1998-02) and move into third on the all-time list.
Her 180 three-pointers also leads all active players in the Pac-10, and with 21 more treys, she would crack into the Pac-10 all-time top-10 for three-point field goals made. No Oregon player is currently in the Pac-10 career three-point field goals made top-10.
MAKING 100 MEMORABLE
• Senior guard Micaela Cocks has led Oregon in scoring during its last two games. Cocks made the 100th game of her career very memorable by scoring a career-high 27 points vs. Long Beach State (Dec. 6) and becoming the second player in the history of the program to drain at least five three-pointers and remain perfect (5-of-5) from long distance.
If Cocks plays in 15 more games this season, she will crack the all-time top-10 for games played.
The New Zealand native's 140 career three-pointers rank sixth all-time, and Cocks has currently drained at least one bucket from long distance in her last 26 games. She is also the only UO player to reach double figures in all 10 games this season.
.500
Oregon sophomore Amanda Johnson has recorded double-doubles in half of the Ducks' games this season. With five on the year, Johnson is currently leading Oregon in scoring (15.3 ppg) and rebounding (10.8 rpg). Johnson's 15.3 ppg ranks fourth in the Pac-10, and her 10.8 rpg game comes in second, as she is one of only two players averaging a double-double in the conference.
Johnson has led Oregon in scoring four times, and has led the Ducks in rebounding on seven occasions. She is just 10 points shy of reaching 400 points for her career.
OFF THE BENCH
Junior forward Nicole Canepa is averaging 13.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game off the bench this season. One of head coach Paul Westhead's first options off the bench, Canepa has set new single-game career high in points, assists, blocks, free throws and field goal percentage this season. She was named to the World Vision Invitational all-tournament team, and was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Nov. 23.
FAST BREAK LEADER
Oregon point guard Nia Jackson emerged on Nov. 29 with a career and game-high 16 points vs. Portland State. Just a few days later, Jackson had a career and game-high eight assists vs. Portland on Dec. 2.
Leading the fast break and keeping the pace of the squad isn't easy, but Jackson's numbers are holding up in the Pac-10. Her 4.3 assists per game rank third, and her 2.4 steals per game rank fourth.
MISSING LINK
Junior forward Victoria Kenyon may not always be a leader in the box score, but her effort on defense is the key to Oregon's fullcourt pressure. Kenyon's role is to pressure the inbound pass, and her job pays huge dividends as Oregon pressures its opponents into traps and turnovers. This season the Ducks have forced 205 turnovers, an average of 20.5 per game.
AVAILABILITY/STATUS
Oregon will have 13 of its 14 players available for this week's games. The Ducks will be without freshman Aliyah Green, who is still returning from an ACL injury suffered in her right knee during her senior season at Jefferson High School. Green's return date is unknown at this time.
WORLD VISION INVITATIONAL
The Oregon women's basketball program would like to thank all fans that donated to “Operation Safety Net” during the World Vision Invitational.
World Vision raised $1,083 during the tournament enough to provide a net of protection for 180 children and one adult. One net covers two people.
Oregon has two games left on its non-conference schedule, closing things out on the road at Wyoming at 1 p.m. PST on Sunday, and at Utah at 6 p.m. PST on Tuesday.
