SANTA CLARA PREVIEW
Santa Clara is off to a 1-2 start this season. The Broncos opened the season with a 73-43 win over Sonoma State, but fell to Iowa, 67-51, and UCLA, 77-51, last weekend.
Junior forward Lena Gipson is leading Santa Clara averaging 14.3 points per game, while sophomore guard Alyssa Shoji is averaging 12.7 points and 3.3 assists per game.
CAL STATE FULLERTON PREVIEW
Cal State Fullerton is under the new direction of first-year head coach Marcia Foster. The Titans are 2-1 on the young season with wins over San Jose State and Sacramento State, and a loss to San Francisco.
Sophomore guard Megan Richardson is averaging 21.3 points per game.
WISCONSIN PREVIEW
Similar to Oregon, Wisconsin is undefeated on the young season, sporting a 3-0 record. Also like the Ducks, the Badgers will play a game on Tuesday, against Wisconsin-Green Bay, before heading to the West Coast.
With wins over North Dakota, Milwaukee and Cleveland State, Wisconsin has four players averaging double figures.
PORTLAND STATE PREVIEW
Portland State, a 2009 WNIT participant and picked by the coaches and media to win the Big Sky Championship, comes into this weekend with a 2-1 record.
The Vikings will play at cross-town rival Portland on Tuesday before heading to the World Vision Invitational.
PSU opened the season with back-to-back wins over Washington and Western Oregon before falling 92-80 at Boise State. Senior guard Claire Faucher leads the squad averaging 15.0 points and 6.3 assists per game.
PRESEASON POLL
Oregon was selected to finish eighth in the both the Pac-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll and the Pac-10 Preseason Media Poll.
The results are not a surprise citing UO's finish to the 2008-09 season which included dropping its final six games of the season and losing 10 of the final 11 tilts of the year.
UO CURRENT STATUS
The Ducks have opened the 2009-10 season and the Paul Westhead era with two victories, an 86-48 win at home vs. Eastern Washington and an 86-81 thriller over Montana in Missoula.
The Ducks' 86 points was their highest scoring effort since an 86-73 victory over Arizona on Jan. 11, 2007, and Oregon's 38-point margin of victory over EWU was its largest since a 102-36 (66-point difference) win over Prairie View A&M on Dec. 10, 2005.
Currently Oregon has four players averaging double figures led by Taylor Lilley's Pac-10 topping 21.5 points per game. Oregon's 86.0 points per game are second in the conference only to Stanford (86. 2 ppg). Lilley's 5.0 three-pointers per game also lead the conference, while Jackson's 5.0 steals per game lead the way in the Pac-10.
AVAILABILITY/STATUS
Oregon will have 13 of its 14 players available for Tuesday's game with Santa Clara. The Ducks will be without freshman Aliyah Green, who is still returning from an ACL injury suffered in her right knee during her senior season at Jefferson High School. Green's return date is unknown at this time.
PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Nicole Canepa broke single-game career scoring highs in back-to-back games for Oregon, resulting in her first ever Pac-10 Player of the Week Award, announced on Monday.
In the Ducks' season opener, an 86-48 win over Eastern Washington, Canepa came off the bench and set a career high with 17 points, and posted the second double-double of her career with 10 rebounds. In Sunday's 86-81 win at Montana, Canepa again was vital off the bench. The 6-foot-5 post scored a game-high tying and team-leading 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while also grabbing nine rebounds. It was another career scoring high for Canepa, who also scored six-points in the final 3:47 of the game, including the basket that gave the Ducks the lead for good. She is avergaing 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
RECORDS IN JEOPARDY
With the senior guard combination of Micaela Cocks and Taylor Lilley patrolling the three-point line, it's no doubt that some records are in jeopardy this season.
Lilley's 156 career three-pointers rank fourth all-time in Oregon history, and in order to become the all-time leader, Lilley needs to knock down 34 for the record - surpassing Missy Croshaw (1990-94, 189). Lilley also has the chance to crack the top-10 for double-figure scoring games. Currently with 43 games of double-digit scoring, Lilley would need to hit double figures in 23 dates to crack the career top-10.
Cocks has the opportunity to claim two all-time records. Her current .856 (131-of-153) career free-throw percentage would set a new program record. In addition, if she sinks at least 68 three-pointers during her senior season, she could potentially become the program's all-time leader. Cocks' current .381 three-point field goal percentage ranks eighth all-time. If she plays in a minimum of 25 games this year, Cocks could also crack the career games played top-10.
WORLD VISION INVITATIONAL
The Oregon women's basketball program is asking Duck fans to join “Operation Safety Net” during the World Vision Invitational from Friday-Sunday, Nov. 27-29, at McArthur Court.
During the round-robin tournament, which welcomes in Cal State Fullerton, Wisconsin and Portland State, Oregon will be partnering with World Vision to take donations for “Operation Safety Net,” which distributes treated mosquito nets worldwide.
Insecticide treated bed nets help prevent the spread of malaria, which is transmitted by a common mosquito that flourishes in more than 100 countries worldwide. Just a $6 donation will purchase one treated bed net.
Malaria is the #4 killer of children under the age of 5 worldwide, as nearly 800,000 children die from malaria each year.
During the three-game tournament, World Vision will be on hand at McArthur Court to accept donations toward its cause. If you are unable to make it to the games, you can donate online at www.worldvision.org/endmalaria.
For more information about World Vision visit www.worldvision.org. Watch UO's video to support the cause HERE.
