Ducks Drop Second In A Row To Top-10 Foe

EUGENE - The Oregon men's tennis team battled its second consecutive top-10 foe on the opening weekend of Pac-10 play, and dropped a hard-fought 6-1 decision to visiting No. 6 UCLA on Saturday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks are now 11-9 on the season and 0-2 in conference. The sixth-ranked Bruins improve to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10.
In singles action, Marcos Verdasco was the only Oregon player to score a victory, winning his first set 7-6, before Harel Srugo, the 30th-ranked player in the nation, retired.
The Bruins have three singles players ranked in the nation's top 50, as No. 21 Mathieu Dehaine scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Oregon's Francisco Gallardo at the No. 2 spot.
UCLA had the 31st-ranked player in the country playing at the No. 3 in the lineup. Oregon sophomore Alex Cornelissen got off to a positive start with a 6-1 win in the first set, but Seguso rallied in the final two with scores of 6-3, 6-0.
Jeremy Dean topped Oregon's Romeo Mortera, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot, while sophomore Geoff Embry had his eight-match winning streak snapped with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Nick Meister at No. 5.
Ahmed Ismail rounded out singles action with a 6-4, 7-6 (9-6) win over Stepehn Wiechert at the No. 6 spot.
The Ducks gave the Bruins a good fight in doubles, as the team of Verdasco and Cornelissen came close to knocking off the No. 37 team of Meister and Srugo, before falling 7-6. At the No. 2 spot the team of Dehaine and Seguso recorded an 8-3 win over Embry and Mortera, while at No. 3, UCLA's Drean and Michael Look were winners over Gallardo and Wiechert by the score of 8-5.
Oregon's match was its final at home this season. The Ducks will finish off Pac-10 action with their final five duals on the road. Up next is Arizona State next Friday and Arizona next Sunday.
