Hudson Homers in 10-0 Devilette Drubbing
03/14/08 | Softball
EUGENE - UO senior Kayleen Hudson hit her fourth homer of the year to propel the Ducks to a 10-0 win vs. Mississippi Valley State in the first game of Friday's afternoon doubleheader.
The Ducks (20-11) weathered a pair of rain delays that were both nearly 45 minutes in length and raised their Cascade Clash record to 3-0.
With her second complete game shutout of the year, junior Melissa Rice (9-4) won her seventh straight game with Friday's one-hitter. The Colville, Wash., native struck out four and walked one in five innings, and now is tied for sixth all-time for UO in career shutouts with former Duck Amy Harris (11).
After a 45-minute rain stoppage delayed the bottom half of the first inning, UO scored seven runs in its first at-bat on RBI singles by sophomore center fielder Neena Bryant and freshman catcher Ashley Kivett, a pair of two-run singles by freshman designated player Monique Fuiava and sophomore first baseman Carlyn Re and a wild pitch that scored Kivett from third base.
The Ducks added two more runs in the second inning on senior right fielder Kayleen Hudson's fourth homer of the season and 16th of her career. The two-run shot down the left field line also scored Fuiava whose double landed just in front of the left field warning track two batters before.
Hudson's homer puts her in a tie for second on the team this year with Bryant and Fuiava, while senior third baseman Joanna Gail leads the squad (5) thanks to her shot Thursday vs. Northern Illinois.
Oregon's final run came in the third inning when sophomore left fielder Blair Williamson scored on a double to center field by Bryant with two outs.
A second rain delay in the fourth inning lated 40 minutes - the same inning Mississippi Valley State (10-13) nearly scored. The leadoff batter walked before the rain delay, then the next batter reached on a fielder's choice grounder that put runners on first and second with no outs when Joanna Gail's errant throw pulled the second baseman off the bag. However, Rice responded by forcing the visitors into three straight outs. The first was a hard, comeback one-hopper that she threw to third for a force-out, followed by a pair of fly-outs to the outfield.
Sophomore Devilette starter Brittany Franklin (4-2) yielded 11 hits, and 10 earned runs in her four innings, and struck out three and walked five.
