EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon opened the 2008 season in convincing fashion Friday, defeating Weber State 6-1 in the morning and Idaho 6-1 in the evening at the Student Tennis Center.
Oregon swept the doubles point to open the evening match, as Stephen Wiechert and Duncan MacDonald-Korth were able to come back and defeat Idaho's Hugh McDonald and Andrew Dobbs in a tiebreak, 8-7 (6-4).
In singles play, Francisco Gallardo bounced back from his loss earlier in the day to defeat Robert Chalkey 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.
Alexander Cornelissen won in convincing fashion as well, defeating Tim Huynh 6-0, 6-3, and Mike Myrhed jumped out to a large lead and then held on in the second set to defeat Hugh McDonald 6-1, 6-4.
At the No. 1 spot, Marcos Verdasco was the only Duck to fall to the Vandals, losing 3-6, 2-6 to Andrey Potapkin.?
With the victory already at hand, Romeo Mortera and Stephen Wiechert played the third set of their matches as a tiebreak to 10. Wichert went on to defeat Andrew Dobbs 4-6, 6-4, 10-1, while Mortera won his match 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.
In the morning match, the Ducks swept the Wildcats to earn the point in the morning's doubles session.
No more than two games ever separated the No. 1 doubles teams, as Oregon's Francisco Gallardo and Marcos Verdasco edged Weber State's Sascha Kiehne and Fabio Mancarella, 8-6.
After leading 7-0, Mikael Myrhed and Alexander Cornelissen held on to defeat Henning Hipp and Nick Plum, 7-3, in No. 2 doubles. Oregon's Duncan MacDonald-Korth and Stephen Wiechert completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Travis Covington and Spencer Marchant.
Oregon continued its strong play during singles as the Ducks won five of their six matches.
The Ducks earned straight-set victories in each of the final three singles matches against Weber State. Myrhed won the first eight games en route to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Travis Covington at the No. 4 position. Wiechert continued the trend at the No. 5 position, defeating Chris Williams, 6-4, 6-3. Newcomer MacDonald-Korth handled Marchant, 6-3, 6-3 at No.6.
In the No. 1 position, Verdasco gained his first victory of the spring, 7-6, 6-4 over Kiehne. Cornelissen, playing at the No.3 spot, was the last match to finish, edging Mancarella 6-4, 6-7, 1-0.
The Ducks only loss of the morning was at the No. 2 spot, as Weber State's Hipp knocked off Gallardo in a tight three-set match, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
Next up Oregon will host Eastern Washington Friday, January 25, at the Student Tennis Center.
